This photo captures a UFO hovering above powerlines in a residential neighborhood. Fortean Picture Library. At 12:30 A.M. on June 28, 1973, a strange "thrashing sound" prompted James Richard, 41, and his 16-year-old daughter, Vanea, to approach the north window of their mobile home in Columbia, Missouri. Just 50 feet away, two bright silvery white beams of light, spaced five feet apart, shone into the night. When the lights suddenly disappeared, an oval-shaped object, approximately 15 feet in diameter, became visible near the ground. Richard was forced to look away from the brilliance, describing the entire area as "lit up as bright as day."
The trees near the UFO were violently swaying as though caught in a fierce wind. One tree nearly touched the ground, with a limb snapping off. Meanwhile, Richard's dogs remained strangely quiet inside the house. Feeling unsettled, Richard grabbed a gun and kept it close as the UFO hovered near the trees. He called the trailer park switchboard, requesting that the police be notified. While on the call, the lights in his home flickered twice.
The UFO drifted northward, its color fading slightly to reveal a silvery surface adorned with bands of blue and orange light. At one point, it approached Richard's home before retreating, and within minutes, it disappeared entirely.
Investigation later revealed broken branches, crushed vegetation, and even burned leaves on trees as high as 35 feet. In the days that followed, more leaves shriveled and died, while the UFO left deep imprints, two feet into the solid ground.
