Traveling within Europe is generally straightforward, offering several transportation choices such as planes, trains, and buses. GoEuro’s Transport Price Index provides a breakdown of the average cost for each transport option across 40 European countries.
GoEuro, a popular European travel booking platform, analyzed ticket price data from millions of sales on their website over the past year. Their findings, presented in an interactive chart, compare the average price per 100 kilometers for each type of transport across various countries.
As noted by Travel + Leisure, there were three countries where flying turned out to be more affordable than taking a train—Switzerland ($33 vs. $42), France ($17 vs. $20), and Spain ($13 vs. $15). In Portugal, the cost of flying and taking the train per 100 kilometers was equal—both priced at nine dollars.
Bus fares are generally less expensive, though there are exceptions. In Finland, for instance, the average bus price stood at $15 per 100 kilometers, while the train cost just $9. For more comparisons, visit GoEuro’s full chart linked below, which offers an extensive list of countries.
