Generally, cleaning plastic patio furniture is straightforward—often, a simple rinse with a garden hose suffices. However, lighter-colored plastic pieces can occasionally develop stubborn stains that resist easy removal. Below, we outline effective techniques for tackling these persistent marks.
Effective Techniques for Removing Stains from Plastic Outdoor Furniture
Although plastic outdoor furniture is simpler to maintain compared to other materials, it can still develop stains—particularly from grass, grease, and dirt. Below are several methods to effectively remove them:
Dish soap: Mix a small amount of dishwashing liquid into a bucket of warm water. Clean the furniture using a rag or sponge soaked in the solution. For tougher stains, switch to a soft-bristled brush.
Vinegar: Combine roughly 1/4 cup of white vinegar with warm water in a bucket. Gently scrub the stains using a soft-bristled brush.
Baking soda: Rinse the furniture with water, then apply baking soda directly to the stains. Let it sit for a few minutes before scrubbing with a sponge. Note: Baking soda is best suited for white plastic furniture, as it may alter the color of other shades.
Laundry detergent: Dissolve 1 tablespoon of detergent in a bucket of warm water. Use a sponge or soft-bristled brush to clean the stains with the mixture.
Bleach or oxygen/non-chlorine bleach: Add 1/4 cup of bleach to a bucket of warm water. Wear rubber gloves and scrub the stains with a sponge or brush. This method is recommended only for white furniture.
After successfully removing the stains using one of the techniques mentioned, rinse the furniture thoroughly with a hose and let it air dry completely.
