It’s hard to believe, but a decade has passed since the release of The Dark Knight, the second installment in Christopher Nolan’s revolutionary superhero trilogy. To commemorate this milestone, Warner Bros. is re-releasing the film in IMAX for a one-week limited run in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Toronto, starting August 24th, as reported by Variety.
The Dark Knight is widely regarded as the pinnacle of the Batman film series, surpassing even Tim Burton’s adaptations and the LEGO-inspired versions. With a 94 percent “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes from both critics and audiences, it stands as the highest-rated film in the Batman franchise.
A significant portion of the film’s praise stems from Heath Ledger’s unforgettable portrayal of The Joker, which earned him a posthumous Oscar for Best Supporting Actor—a historic achievement. Even Michael Caine, who plays Alfred, Bruce Wayne’s loyal butler and confidant, initially hesitated about reintroducing The Joker after Jack Nicholson’s iconic performance in Burton’s 1989 film. However, his doubts vanished upon learning Ledger would take on the role.
Caine initially believed, “You don’t try and top Jack.” However, his perspective shifted when Nolan revealed that Ledger had been cast. “I thought: ‘Now that’s the one guy who could pull it off!’ My confidence was restored,” Caine shared with Empire Magazine.
The movie will be shown at AMC Universal Citywalk Imax in California, AMC Lincoln Square Imax in New York, AMC Metreon Imax in San Francisco, and Ontario Place Cinesphere Imax in Toronto. Tickets for this limited screening will be available starting Friday, July 20th.
