What Is the Tigris-Euphrates River System?
This vital water network consists of two rivers, now recognized as the Tigris and Euphrates, which travel from North to South, originating in Turkey and emptying into the Persian Gulf.
Source of the Tigris River
The Tigris River originates in the Taurus Mountains of Eastern Turkey, moving along the Syrian-Turkish boundary before splitting into smaller streams. It eventually merges with the Euphrates near al-Qurnah, forming the Shatt-al-Arab River.
Dams and Embankments
Both rivers begin in the Taurus Mountains, flowing southward toward the Persian Gulf. As they approach the Syrian-Turkish border, their waters are regulated by artificial dams and levees, ensuring a steady flow of at least 500 cubic meters per second (approximately 18,000 cubic feet per second).
Central Flood Plain
For humanity, the most significant feature of these water resources is that the Euphrates River basins provide some of the most fertile land in the area.
Unfortunately, humans have not reciprocated this generosity, as pollution, conflict, and other ill-advised human activities have resulted in greater water shortages and heightened levels of contaminated water in the region.
Importance of the Euphrates Basin in the History of the Middle East
The Euphrates River Basin is frequently called the "cradle of civilization" by historians and anthropologists, as its river valley provided an ideal setting for communities to form and thrive through agriculture and trade.
Numerous tributaries and marshlands offered a dependable source of drinking water for an expanding population, along with sufficient water for irrigation systems to support crop growth, ensuring food security and surplus for trade. This progress led to revolutionary advancements in art, writing, mathematics, and various scientific fields.
Starting modestly, this region became the foundation for some of the most powerful empires in history, such as the Persian and the Ottoman.
Effects of Climate Change on the Euphrates River
The drying of the Euphrates River serves as a warning that climate change will have severe consequences for humanity unless global cooperation and NGOs can drive significant transformations.
Northern Syria has experienced a 1-degree temperature rise over the past century, with reduced rainfall worsening the issue. Declining water levels are expected to shrink reservoirs such as Lake Assad and disrupt electricity generation at hydroelectric facilities like the Atatürk Dam and Alouk Water Station.
These issues will exacerbate the struggles of approximately 7.2 million refugees displaced by civil war, who depend on these rivers for essential needs. Thus, these rivers are not only a cornerstone in the development of humanity but also a critical component of contemporary human rights.
The Euphrates River Basin is where beer was first created more than 7,000 years ago. While it remains a popular alcoholic drink today, the invention of fermented barley was so significant that the Mesopotamians documented the recipe and even dedicated a deity to it. A 4,000-year-old poem honoring the beer goddess Ninkasi features a joyful brewer thanking her for this divine beverage.
