Grocery stores are filled with temptations designed to make you spend more. To stick to your food budget, it's essential to identify which products tend to be overpriced.
Business Insider compiled a list of items that are often overpriced, based on insights from Consumer Reports' senior projects editor, Tod Marks. While some are obvious—such as convenience foods—the list also includes a few surprising items:
Products with added features.
Companies want you to buy the latest upgrades. "Maybe it's a water bottle with a new spout or a diaper with a new, innovative closure—any new convenience features that catch your eye," Marks explains.
Fortified food products.
Enhancing everyday foods with added health benefits is a big opportunity for food and beverage companies. They understand that your health-conscious goals can conflict with your love for snacks like potato chips. Be cautious of anything that claims to be "healthier"—like baked potato chips or products with added ingredients, Marks advises.
Bulk-sized items.
The idea behind buying in bulk is usually to save money by purchasing larger quantities, but Marks points out that sometimes the larger size isn't actually more economical. "The only way to verify is by checking the unit price labels, located under the price on each product," he advises. "Generally, it's still true, but there are plenty of cases where smaller sizes may be cheaper depending on promotions or sales at any given time."
We've discussed this before—don't always trust per-unit pricing!
