Peanut butter has been a pantry staple for generations of Americans. There's a good chance you have a jar in your kitchen right now. If so, take a moment to check the label: your jar might be part of a widespread recall affecting 49 Jif peanut butter products. This recall comes in response to concerns that the products may be linked to a Salmonella outbreak, which has sickened at least 14 people, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Here's what you need to know.
Why is Jif peanut butter being recalled?
In collaboration with the FDA, J.M. Smucker Company has voluntarily recalled 49 Jif peanut butter products due to potential Salmonella contamination. As of May 1, 2022, 14 illnesses, including two hospitalizations, have been reported across 12 states, all linked to certain Jif peanut butter products manufactured at the J.M. Smucker Company facility in Lexington, Ky., according to the FDA.
Which Jif peanut butter products are affected by the recall?
The FDA reports that the recalled Jif peanut butter was sold nationwide in stores and various outlets. The affected products have UPC codes between 1274425 and 2140425, with all codes ending in 425. You can find the UPC codes on the Jif labels near the best-if-used-by date. Since Jif peanut butter has a shelf life of two years, even if you bought your jar a while ago, it may still be part of the recall.
You can find the complete list of the 49 recalled Jif peanut butter products on both the Jif and FDA websites.
What actions should you take if you have purchased the recalled Jif peanut butter?
The FDA advises that anyone with the recalled Jif peanut butter products “should wash and sanitize any surfaces and utensils that may have been in contact with the peanut butter,” and “dispose of it immediately.” A post on Jif’s website states the company is “committed to reimbursing affected consumers” and directs anyone with inquiries or wishing to report adverse reactions to visit www.jif.com/contact-us.
You can also reach them by calling 800-828-9980 Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET. However, due to the high volume of calls, the company recommends using their online form for quicker response times.
