This sleek and subtle twist-and-tuck updo is gaining popularity at events from brunch to the office. Celebrities like Keke Palmer, Gigi Hadid, and Taylor Swift have been key in bringing the French roll back to the spotlight, especially on the red carpet.
“The slicked-back, tight ponytail trend has been around for a while, so now people are looking for something more relaxed and stylish,” says Kimberly Gueldner, celebrity stylist and founder of VOËL. “Constantly pulling your hair back can cause breakage along the hairline, so it’s refreshing to switch things up.”
The best part? This hairstyle is versatile enough for both casual and formal settings. Here’s how you can achieve the look.

The French roll is a chic updo where the hair is smoothly gathered and rolled across the back of the head. Unlike the French twist, which is more sleek and formal, the French roll is typically more voluminous and rounded, often creating a soft, wrapped fold effect.
"Glamorous French actresses of the '60s, such as Brigitte Bardot, were known for their iconic updos. Perhaps that's where the style's name originates," shares Mayara Macedo, a hairstylist at The Second Floor Salon. "This hairstyle is versatile, easily dressed up for special occasions, while a slightly relaxed version is perfect for everyday wear."
How to Create a French Roll
The French roll looks best on medium to long hair. If you have shorter hair, Macedo suggests using clip-in extensions or a ponytail to achieve the style.
Step 1: Prepare Your Tools
Here are the supplies you'll need to create a French roll hairstyle:
- Texturizing spray
- Bobby pins
- Hairspray
- Finishing spray
Step 2: Apply Texturizing Spray
Start with clean, dry hair. "If your hair is fine or silky, add some texture using a little mousse or texturizing spray," advises Macedo. This will provide volume and help your hair stay put.
Step 3: Sweep Hair to One Side
Gather all your hair to one side and secure it with bobby pins in a vertical line along the back of your head.
Step 4: Twist
Macedo advises, "Take the loose hair and twist it upward, directing it back to the center of your head. Tuck the ends into the roll and secure with bobby pins to hold the twist in place. You may also add pins along the twist for extra hold."
Step 5: Style
Make adjustments as needed, "pulling out a few wisps for a softer look or smoothing the surface for a more refined appearance," suggests Macedo. "If you have bangs, you can either incorporate them with the rest of the hair or leave them out and style them as you like—split in the middle or swept to the side."
Step 6: Finish with Hairspray
Finish off with a spritz of medium-hold hairspray to keep everything secure. A touch of shine spray can also add a glossy finish that reflects the light.
