Every year, millions of people embark on cruises, only to return to their land-based homes once the journey concludes. Imagine a cruise that never ends—a perpetual voyage on the seas. This is the vision of a floating city, brought to life by the ambitious Freedom Ship project.
Freedom Ship is designed to host long-term residents, unlike traditional cruise ships. It will travel around the world every two years, providing all the amenities of a typical hometown, such as urban districts, medical facilities, educational institutions, and one of the planet's most expansive shopping centers.
Although development of Freedom Ship has stalled in recent years, its ultimate goal is to serve as a luxurious residence for the elite. In this article, we’ll explore the ambitious plans for this floating metropolis and compare it to the most massive cruise ships in operation today.
The World's Biggest Ship
The development of Freedom Ship, a proposed floating city, is currently paused, awaiting sufficient financial support.No existing cruise ship could rival the sheer scale of Freedom Ship. Picture a mile-long row of 25-story skyscrapers in New York City, then envision that same structure floating on water. This mental image captures the colossal dimensions of Freedom Ship.
With proposed dimensions of 4,320 feet (1,317 meters) in length, 725 feet (221 meters) in width, and 340 feet (103 meters) in height, Freedom Ship would surpass the length of a football field and exceed the width of two combined. Such a massive structure wouldn’t just float—it could also traverse the world’s oceans with ease.
The Construction of Floating Cities
Freedom Ship will far surpass any current ocean vessel in size—it will be nearly four times longer than the largest cruise ships today. For instance, the 2023 record-holder, the "Icon of the Seas", measures about 1,198 feet long, while Freedom Ship would stretch an incredible 4,320 feet. Additionally, its weight of 2.7 million tons would dwarf the Icon of the Seas' 250,800 tons by a significant degree.
Constructing the Framework
Freedom Ship’s foundation will consist of 520 airtight steel compartments, securely fastened together to create a robust base. Each compartment will stand 80 feet (24 meters) tall, with widths ranging from 50 to 100 feet (15 to 30 meters) and lengths between 50 and 120 feet (15 to 37 meters). These units will be combined to form expansive interconnected platforms measuring approximately 300 x 400 feet (91 x 122 meters).
Once assembled, these larger platforms will be transported to the ocean, where they will be connected to form the ship’s nearly mile-long foundation. The superstructure will then be built atop this base. Norman Nixon, the visionary behind the floating city concept, estimates that construction will take roughly three years to complete once initiated.
Propulsion System
Moving such a colossal vessel through water will require immense engine power. Freedom Ship will be powered by 100 diesel engines, each capable of producing 3,700 horsepower. The estimated cost for each engine is at least $1 million.
This highlights the project’s staggering expenses. While the total cost of Freedom Ship remains undisclosed, the latest estimate places it at $10 billion. These high construction costs will ultimately be reflected in the prices for residents, assuming the project secures the necessary financial support to move forward.
Life at Freedom Ship
The largest ship in the world will stretch over 4,000 feet in length and stand 300 feet tall.Freedom Ship plans to feature 17,000 residential units, accommodating over 60,000 individuals, including residents and the essential staff needed to operate the vessel. This floating metropolis will continuously traverse the globe, visiting most coastal cities and allowing residents to explore the world without ever leaving their home.
All employees aboard the ship will receive meals, accommodation, uniforms, medical and dental care, and access to ongoing education programs. The ship will boast all the amenities of a contemporary city, including:
- A state-of-the-art hospital costing $200 million
- A 3,800-foot (1,158-meter) runway designed for private planes and small commercial aircraft with a maximum capacity of 40 passengers
- Storage facilities for private aircraft
- A dedicated marina for residents' yachts
- An expansive shopping mall
- An educational system covering kindergarten through college
- A golf driving range
- Designated bicycle paths
- 200 acres of open space for recreational activities
Costs
Unsurprisingly, Freedom Ship does not prioritize affordable housing. Prices for suites were initially set at $121,000 for a 300-square-foot unit, escalating to $11 million for a luxurious 5,100-square-foot suite on the exclusive 21st floor, where prices begin at $3 million. Note that these figures do not account for post-pandemic inflation.
For potential residents, one of the most appealing aspects of Freedom Ship is the absence of local taxes, including income, real estate, sales, business, and import taxes. However, residents must still comply with federal tax regulations in their home countries.
Fun and Secure
Residents can indulge in a variety of entertainment options, including numerous restaurants, casinos, nightclubs, and theaters. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy tennis, basketball, bowling, putting greens, swimming pools, gyms, a skating rink, and fishing at the ship's marina. Each residence will feature 100 channels of global satellite TV and local programming from nearby regions. High-speed internet access will also be provided in every unit.
Similar to a city police force, Freedom Ship will have a dedicated security team patrolling the vessel around the clock. Additionally, all crew members will undergo security training. An advanced electronic security system will be implemented to ensure the safety and protection of all residents.
Eco-Friendly Living on the Seas
Freedom Ship is designed to be environmentally friendly, according to its developers. The ship will eliminate the need for a sewage treatment plant by using incinerator toilets, priced at approximately $3,000 each, to burn waste. The resulting ashes will be repurposed for flower beds. Waste oil will be utilized in an exhaust steam plant to generate electricity, preventing ocean pollution.
Additionally, all glass, paper, and metal waste will be recycled and sold. Freedom Ship International estimates that each resident will generate 80 percent less waste compared to their current land-based lifestyle.
Risks of Living on a Floating City
The idea of a floating city introduces unique and unprecedented challenges. One of the most apparent risks is climate change, as rising sea levels could create unpredictable obstacles for navigation or docking. Additionally, floating cities would need to accommodate climate refugees seeking safety. With extreme weather events becoming more frequent due to climate change, these floating habitats could face significant vulnerabilities.
Environmental concerns also surround floating cities. For instance, how would critical marine ecosystems, such as large marine mammals and coral reefs, be affected by the presence of a massive floating city? From rising sea levels to unforeseen ecological consequences, the potential risks associated with these structures remain difficult to fully anticipate.
