In March 1966, a British teenager captured images of these questionable "UFOs"—likely cardboard cutouts—and convinced many that they were extraterrestrial spacecraft.In UFO Reality (1983), British ufologist Jenny Randles observed that some UFO witnesses experience a "sensation of being isolated, or transported from the real world into a different environmental framework... I call this the 'Oz Factor,' after the fairytale land of Oz."
On a late summer evening in 1978, a couple in Manchester, England, observed a UFO hovering above a normally busy street, curiously devoid of people and vehicles. Similarly, on April 15, 1989, a father and son in Novato, California, witnessed a metallic, gold-colored, dumbbell-shaped object accompanied by four smaller discs, hovering low in the sky near their home—equally puzzling was the complete lack of other people at that time of day when they would normally be out and about.
According to Randles, such accounts imply that the "consciousness of the witness [is] the focal point of the UFO encounter."
