Conquering the heat requires staying hydrated, particularly if you’re determined to stick to your workout routine in this intense summer heat. We’ve previously mentioned that your freezer needs to stock up on water bottles. But what if I told you that these water bottles should be frozen sideways—and at a specific angle? It’s totally worth it, trust me.
Whether you're gearing up for a morning run or just need quick access to the coldest water to survive this heat wave, here’s the simple yet effective hack you need to maximize your chilled water intake.
Chill out with a perfectly placed 45-degree angle
The only way I can motivate myself to go for runs in the summer is by heading out the door before 8 a.m. As part of my nightly ritual, I make sure to put a water bottle in the freezer, so it’s ice-cold and ready for my run the next morning. Freezing the bottle upright means I end up waiting for the ice block to melt off the bottom to chill the entire bottle.
Instead, the optimal way to prepare your ice water is to fill the bottle just under halfway and lay it on its side. The key is to angle it at a 45-degree tilt, not lying flat. This way, the ice block doesn’t obstruct the opening. In the morning, when you’re ready to go, take the bottle out and fill the remaining space with water. The ice block touches and chills the entire water immediately, eliminating any waiting.
Now, you’re all set to grab your chilled bottle and think about the best workouts to do when the heat is on. (And if you’ve never put a water bottle in the freezer overnight, consider this a helpful tip!)
