From kitchen tools to bathroom essentials and even electronics—nothing lasts forever. Even if an item seems to be functioning just fine, it may be more beneficial for your health or safety to replace it. Here's when it's best to replace common household items.
Bath Towels
Replacing towels can be tricky, but generally, most towels last about two years. While it's not a disaster if you don't replace them on schedule, they’ll start to lose their absorbency and look more worn over time.
However, there are exceptions. Towels in your guest bathroom or those you use at the beach can typically last a few years longer. On the flip side, towels used frequently to dry your hands may only hold up for a year. Consider repurposing old towels for household cleaning or donating them to a local animal shelter.
Smoke Detectors
As Kat Christie, licensed contractor, DIY expert, and founder of She Fixed That LLC, advises, smoke detectors should be replaced at least every ten years. “Always follow the manufacturer's recommendation. When installing a new one, mark the installation date. Over time, the plastic casing can yellow, so if you notice discoloration, it's time to replace it.”
If your home has recently undergone renovations, you may want to replace old smoke detectors. “Dust, cobwebs, and other pollutants can affect the internal sensors. If construction was done without covering the units, it's safer to replace them.”
Finally, if you can't recall when you last bought your smoke detector, that's a clear indication it’s time for a replacement. “It's a small investment to make, but it could save your life,” says Christie.
Pillows
We spend at least eight hours each night using our pillows (hopefully), but we often don’t replace them as frequently as we should. According to a bedding expert from Cozy Earth, you should replace your pillows every one to two years. “Pillows can trap allergens like dust mites and pet dander, which can cause allergic reactions, skin breakouts, and neck pain. Regularly replacing them helps ensure your pillows remain clean, allergen-free, and supportive.”
Other signs that it's time to replace your pillows include waking up with a stiff neck or noticing a rise in allergy symptoms.
Mattresses
Few things are more unpleasant than an old mattress. So, when is it time to replace yours? Jack Dell’Accio, founder of Essentia Organic Mattress, explains that it varies. “It’s not really about how long you’ve had your mattress, but how long it continues to provide proper support for your body,” he says. “The key factor when choosing a new mattress is its density. A denser foam mattress will be more durable and supportive for a longer period.”
If you’re unsure whether your mattress needs replacing or if your back pain is just acting up, Dell’Accio suggests checking the density of each layer to see if it’s still as supportive as it once was. Generally, mattresses last between seven and ten years, though a latex mattress can last up to fifteen years.
Small Appliances
While nothing lasts as long as it used to, using a malfunctioning small appliance can become a serious fire hazard. However, if your old blender is still making margaritas, there’s no need to replace it just yet. But if an appliance starts shorting out or smoking, it’s definitely time for an upgrade.
Cookware
Cast iron and metal cookware can last a lifetime, but non-stick pans have a finite life. If a non-stick pan gets scratched, starts peeling, or becomes discolored, it's time to toss it. Even if it appears in good condition but food starts sticking, that's another sign it needs to be replaced.
Toothbrushes
Oral hygiene is essential to your overall health, so using a toothbrush that’s dirty or no longer effective is not a good idea. The American Dental Association recommends replacing your toothbrush every three to four months. However, if you tend to brush hard or notice the bristles are frayed, it’s time to replace it sooner.
Bedding
The good news is that bedding doesn’t have an expiration date regarding safety or comfort. However, once it starts looking worn out, it's probably time to invest in something new. If you notice rips, tears, or worn-out elastic on fitted sheets, it could affect your comfort and sleep quality. So, upgrading your bedding might be more important than you think.
