Anyone who had a Nintendo Entertainment System growing up likely remembers the Super Mario Bros. theme song—at least part of it. In 1985, Nintendo revealed that the beloved 8-bit melody actually has official lyrics, though most fans of the game have never had the chance to hear them.
As reported by Nerdist, the original Mario theme song didn’t have any lyrics. Super Mario Bros. hit the scene in 1985, and from the start, everything about the game, including Koji Kondo’s upbeat theme music, became a cultural phenomenon. Soon after its release, a Japanese radio station invited fans to submit lyrics to accompany the tune. Nintendo was so taken with one of the submissions that they decided to record the lyrics and release the song on vinyl.
In the English version, the song begins with "Today, full of energy, Mario is still running, running / Go save Princess Peach! Go!" Familiar characters from the Mario universe, such as Goomba, Lakitu, and Cheep Cheep, are also mentioned in the lyrics.
After going through the full lyrics, you can listen to the original version above, which has a much catchier feel in its native Japanese.
