If you're dealing with a persistent tax issue, like the Bankrate reader who’s been waiting two years for a refund, the IRS offers help. The Taxpayer Advocate Service is here to help taxpayers address a wide range of problems.
Perhaps your refund hasn’t arrived, you have incorrect penalties, or you simply need financial help. The TAS is an independent arm within the IRS, with an office in every state, and they might be able to assist if regular IRS channels haven’t worked for you.
According to Bankrate, you can contact their toll-free number at 1-877-777-4778 for assistance. You will need to have the following information ready:
Your full name, address, and Social Security number.
Your contact number and the most convenient time for a call.
The tax return type and the relevant tax year.
A summary of your issue and the steps you've already taken to resolve it with the IRS.
Once your case is accepted, a tax advocate will be assigned to help you and will stay in touch with you until the matter is resolved. The advocate will provide their name, contact number, and a timeline for resolution. You will also receive progress updates from the advocate.
They also maintain a Systemic Advocacy Management database for reporting larger-scale issues with IRS procedures. For more information, visit the links below.
