While a fresh, floral scent can definitely carry you through the colder months, there's something undeniably comforting about the rich, complex notes of oud or a luxurious gourmand. For those who lean toward subtler skin scents, fall offers a range of delicate options. If you're on the hunt for a new fragrance, dive into the trends that experts predict will dominate the season's airwaves.
1. Cozy, Smooth Vanilla
Vanilla is a staple year-round, but there’s something about autumn’s chill and the cozy, creaminess of vanilla that go together like a dream. “Vanilla is giving off major nostalgic vibes. It’s sweet and creamy, but still versatile enough to blend with florals or spices for a more modern twist,” says Jacqui Rubinoff, founder and perfumer at Eye of Love. “It’s that comforting, familiar scent that’s getting a cool, fresh update. It’s timeless, but with today’s blends, it can be layered and personalized for a fresh, unique scent experience.”
2. The Return of Tuberose
Don’t write off florals quite so fast. This autumn, we’re seeing a return of tuberose, but this time it has a softer spin. “The new tuberose that we'll see in the upcoming months and throughout 2025 has a completely different character,” says Yana Zhakhouskaya, owner of niche perfume magazine Cosmetique. “It is lighter, fresher, younger, and less buttercream-laced-with-opium and more macaron-with-vanilla-fairy-dust.” She says that if you’re not a fan of traditional white florals, this one might just sway you.
3. Resinous Amber
Another scent that cycles back around every autumn is amber, beloved for its warmth, richness, and slightly sweet throw. It also layers well with other fall favorites like vanilla, oud, and spices. “Amber has an enveloping quality that feels both luxurious and grounding, making it a go-to scent for the cooler months,” says Rubinoff. “Its rich, inviting nature makes it the perfect choice for those looking for a fragrance that complements the season's cozy, intimate atmosphere without being overly sweet.”
4. Invigorating Green Notes
For a long time, those seeking fresh fragrances were limited to citrusy colognes or delicate “skin scents.” But according to Zhakhouskaya, “A new wave of freshness is emerging: the green essence of freshly cut grass, zesty basil, refreshing verbena, cool rosemary, and crisp mint.” She believes this shift towards green freshness reflects a growing appreciation for earthy, subtle scents. “A green-tinged fragrance is the perfect way to introduce a breath of fresh air into your daily routine,” she explains.
5. Contemporary Woodsy Aromas
Autumn always brings fresh takes on wood-inspired fragrances. This season, expect to encounter notes of dried leaves, smoldering woods, and smoky textures. “While traditional sandalwood, musk, cedar, and incense still prevail, these modern variations are popping up more in niche, high-end fragrances,” says Darryl Do, senior perfumer at Delbia Do. “Consumers are looking for more versatile, personality-driven twists on classic woody scents.”
6. Tropical Fruit Accents
After dominating the fragrance scene for years, cherry is now making way for lighter, fresher tropical notes such as mango, passion fruit, kiwi, and pineapple. Even more exotic fruits—like feijoa, dragon fruit, and star fruit—are beginning to appear on the radar.
“The shift from darker, seductive red cherries, as well as strawberries and currants, to lighter, dreamier tropical scents is driven by Gen Z’s desire for playfulness and carefree joy,” explains Zhakhouskaya. “These fragrances make people smile, transport the wearer to beautiful faraway places, and strike the perfect harmony between sweetness and freshness.”
7. Bold, Dark, and Alluring
Autumn, with its crisp air and mysterious energy, is the perfect time for deep, seductive scents. “Every trend creates its opposite, and the long-running popularity of light, airy fragrances has given rise to richer, more intense aromas—yet still with a refined balance,” says Mark Crames, CEO and chief perfumer at Demeter Fragrances. Expect notes of dark rose, oak, patchouli, velvet orchid, and blackcurrant to define this trend.
8. Pheromone-Inspired Fragrances
Pheromones may not be a new concept, but their presence is growing as subtle skin scents become more popular. “Pheromone-infused fragrances combine captivating scents with pheromones, which are known to subtly enhance attraction and lift your mood,” explains Rubinoff. “These fragrances are perfect for those seeking a scent that goes beyond smelling good. Pheromone-infused scents help you feel more magnetic and social, all while smelling fantastic.”
9. Refined Gourmands
The PSL might have a reputation for being a little basic, but Do suggests that traditional fall scents like pumpkin and cinnamon are getting a sophisticated makeover. “Many classic, overly sweet autumn gourmands might be too heavy for early fall; we're always looking for fresh and unique spins on familiar mass-market trends,” he shares. “This season, expect to find more plum, brandy, ginger, star anise, and even green florals blending with traditional fall gourmand notes, as fine and niche fragrances start incorporating more floral nuances.”
