But have you ever considered using concrete for your countertop? Many are turning to concrete as an alternative to granite or synthetic surfaces for kitchen remodels. Yes, concrete is tough and resilient, but why make this rough, industrial material the centerpiece of your kitchen, the very heart of your home?
First off, forget about the old notions of gray and rough. What began as a low-cost, experimental option in the 1970s has now blossomed into a refined and specialized craft. Modern concrete artisans handcraft each countertop to meet the precise needs of their clients, balancing form and function. Today, concrete countertops are true one-of-a-kind works of art, reflecting the personality and style of the homeowner.

The Romans began using it as early as 509 B.C., constructing vast and impressive structures during the Roman Republic. The iconic ruins that attract visitors -- the Pantheon, the Coliseum, Pompeii -- were built from concrete and remain as proof of its durability.
After the fall of the Roman Empire around 400 A.D., concrete construction nearly vanished in Europe. It wasn’t until 1754 that concrete technology made a comeback. William Smeaton, regarded as the father of civil engineering in England, developed a mortar made from limestone and clay that hardened underwater. This was used for the limestone foundations of the third Eddystone Lighthouse off Plymouth in Devon, England.
Seventy years after Smeaton's innovation, another British inventor, Joseph Aspdin, patented a refined version of hydraulic lime mortar, naming it Portland cement. However, concrete construction didn't gain widespread momentum until 1871, when American David O. Saylor patented his own perfected formula for hydraulic cement and established a factory to mass-produce it.
Today, concrete stands as the most commonly used building material worldwide. Its hydraulic properties allow it to serve as an underwater foundation for bridges, docks, and piers. Concrete's compressive strength makes it perfect for constructing roads and skyscrapers, while its malleability enables the creation of graceful structures like bridge arches and plaza fountains.

Concrete is tough, durable, heat-resistant, and incredibly solid. What's more, it offers a unique touch—no other kitchen will feature a countertop quite like yours.
If you've always imagined cooking on a countertop that resembles the color of the ocean, concrete can make that dream come true. Likewise, you can match it to an antique pitcher, a hint of color in your floor, or the shade of your first love’s eyes. Just as a paint store offers an endless color palette, the range of shades available for concrete countertops is just as vast.
By adding pigments during the mixing process, you can create a countertop with a solid, uniform color. To achieve a more textured, variegated effect, you can either mix the pigment unevenly or apply it with a trowel after the concrete is poured into the mold.
For a more translucent effect, you can use acid stains or dyes instead of pigments. These colorants are applied to the concrete after it’s fully cured. While they only penetrate the surface lightly, acid stains and dyes distribute color across the countertop in a way that mimics the natural variation found in stone.
The aggregates you select, combined with the grind-and-polish technique, can significantly influence the final look of a concrete countertop. Aggregates are materials that mix with the sand and cement to enhance the concrete's strength. In large-scale applications like roads and foundations, coarse gravel is used, but finer materials offer both strength and aesthetic appeal in countertops, where style matters just as much as function. Grinding the surface exposes the aggregates, revealing natural river pebbles, gleaming marble chips, or vibrant colored glass. A final polish gives the countertop a sleek, smooth finish.
For a truly unique touch, many people choose to embed meaningful objects or artifacts within the concrete. These items can range from fossils and geodes to CDs and car parts.
The items embedded in concrete aren’t just decorative; they often serve functional purposes as well. Since concrete starts as a liquid mix, it takes the shape of whatever mold it's poured into. You can incorporate various features directly into the mold, such as a drainboard that slopes toward the sink, a trough to store eggs, or even storage space for knives.
Concrete’s moldability also lets you break away from the standard rectangular countertop with a bullnose edge. With concrete casting, you can design curves, angles, and even vertical sink faces. The edges could feature a Florentine relief, a geometric pattern, or even inscribe a favorite saying. If you can design it, you can mold it into your countertop.
Concrete countertops offer a blend of beauty, individuality, and functionality. But before you dive into pouring concrete, there are a few things to consider. Keep reading to find out more.

They mixed crushed rock and volcanic ash, which hardened after being exposed to water (cement), along with sand and bits of rock, brick, and pottery, creating a substance strong enough to build with. The Romans referred to it as opus caementicium.
Concrete – a term in philosophy describing something tangible, something you can touch, see, smell, taste, or hear, as opposed to an abstract idea or concept.
Concrete – a grammatical category for a noun that refers to a person (Milton Hershey), a place (Hershey, Pa.), or a thing (Hershey bar) that can be perceived by the senses.
Factors to Consider for Concrete Countertops
Before installing concrete countertops, it's essential to ensure your cabinets can support their weight.
Plush Studios/Riser/Getty ImagesAccording to the National Kitchen and Bath Association, for kitchens under 150 square feet (1 square meters), 132" (330 cm) or 11' (3.3 m) of usable countertop space is recommended. For kitchens over 150 square feet, 198" (495 cm) or 16.5' (4.95 m) of counter space is ideal [source: Farris]. Countertops typically range from 24 to 26" (60 to 65 cm) in depth, and if you want to integrate functional elements like a sloping drain board into your concrete countertop, it should be at least 2.5" (6.25 cm) thick. Concrete at that thickness weighs around 30 pounds per square foot (150 kg per sq. m) [source: Cheng]. In a smaller kitchen, this could mean over 650 lbs (300 kg) of countertop weight on your cabinets, and in larger kitchens, it could be nearly 1,000 lbs (450 kg).
The weight of concrete is a significant physical consideration. Concrete countertops are heavier than any other material, including granite. You'll need to evaluate the strength and condition of your cabinets and floors to determine if they can handle the weight of a concrete countertop. Factors to consider include the age and condition of the cabinets, as well as their placement – are they secured to a wall or freestanding?
To strengthen cabinets, you can add 1/2" (1.25 cm) plywood to their sides and backs using glue and screws. To help spread the weight across a larger surface, place 3/4" (1.875 cm) plywood on top of the cabinets. However, keep in mind that this reinforcement may alter your cabinets' dimensions and appearance, and it will increase the height of your countertop.
In addition to weight, consider whether a concrete countertop fits your lifestyle. Like all countertop materials, concrete has its own set of strengths and weaknesses.
Concrete is tough and durable, but it requires more upkeep than granite. You’ll need to strip and reseal it with wax every three months. Even with proper care, concrete will change in appearance over time. It develops fine cracks as it adjusts to temperature shifts. While it won’t melt under a hot pot, it might chip if the pot is set down too roughly. Also, no available sealant offers complete protection from stains and scratches.
Concrete is not the ideal choice for countertops in earthquake-prone areas. Its strength is primarily compressive, making it able to bear the weight of heavy loads like tractor-trailers and skyscrapers without breaking. However, it’s vulnerable to twisting. If the supporting structures shift, concrete will crack.
While the materials needed to create concrete are inexpensive, the expertise of a skilled concrete artisan comes at a cost. A basic professional fabrication and installation of concrete countertops typically runs about $70 per square foot. For countertops with added features, you should expect to pay $200 or more per square foot. You can try making the countertop yourself, but it could result in extra costs elsewhere. Creating a Concrete Countertop
The process of pouring concrete for a countertop is quite similar to pouring it for a driveway, utilizing nearly identical techniques.

Unlike other countertop materials, which are cut from large slabs, concrete countertops are molded into shape. The next step involves constructing the mold. If you decide on the pour-in-place method, the mold is built right on top of your cabinets. For precast countertops, molds are made separately, and after the countertop is completed and sealed, it's transported to your kitchen.
After assembling the mold, sealing any leaks, cleaning it, and securing it firmly to a stable, level surface, it's time to prepare the concrete. The mix ratio of cement, sand, aggregate, and water determines the concrete's texture and strength. Additives such as water reducer (which allows you to create workable concrete with less water), retardant (which slows the setting process), fibers (for added durability), and pigments are also incorporated at this stage.
Once the wet concrete maintains its shape when held in your (heavy-duty rubber gloved) hand, summon your strength for the pour. After evaluating the concrete's consistency or slump, begin transferring it by the shovelful from the mixing vessel to the mold. There will be no time for coffee breaks, as concrete starts setting, losing its plasticity, approximately 30 minutes after mixing.
Shovel the wet concrete into the mold until the bottom is covered, then use hammer taps or a palm sander to vibrate the mold and help the mixture flow into the corners and around reinforcement bars. Repeat the layering and vibrating process until the mold is full. Use a clean, straight 2x4 to screed (level) the bottom edge. If you're pouring in place, this will serve as the top.
About 30 minutes after pouring, smooth the surface with a wooden float. Allow the concrete some time to set, then finish smoothing the surface using the flat edge of a trowel.
The concrete can take anywhere from three days to a week to fully cure, depending on temperature, humidity, and the type of cement used. Ideally, the curing process should occur in a climate-controlled space with an average temperature of 75°F (24°C) and high humidity.
The concrete remains green, or not fully hardened, when the mold is removed. Therefore, the countertop needs to be carefully supported when it's lifted from the mold and flipped for finishing. This partial hardening allows for easier grinding and polishing but also makes the surface more susceptible to scratches and gouges.
Grinding starts with a coarse grinding pad and gradually moves to finer pads. The same sequence is followed for polishing. This is a demanding, time-consuming, and expensive process, best completed within 10 days after the pour.
Once the surface reaches the desired smoothness and shine, apply multiple coats of a food-grade penetrating sealer, followed by a layer of beeswax. Place the countertop on leveled and prepared cabinets, filling any seams with a color-matched caulk.
Epoxy and urethane sealers offer an alternative to penetrating sealers. These create a glossy, plastic-like barrier that provides better protection against stains. However, they come with some disadvantages. They are not heat-resistant, prone to scratching, may peel off the surface, and could contain solvents harmful in a food-handling environment.
Risks of Concrete Countertops
No matter if you're using red, yellow, blue, or green, it's essential to wear a durable pair of gloves when handling concrete.If you're tackling a DIY concrete countertop or thinking about hiring a professional for a pour-in-place project at your home, you must take precautions to minimize health risks linked to various concrete materials.
- Cement is a fine powder that can easily become airborne. Since it hardens when wet, it’s crucial to avoid getting it in your eyes and lungs.
- Aggregates may contain silica dust, which can harm your lungs.
- Fresh concrete is highly alkaline and may cause burns to the skin.
- Some pigments and acid stains contain heavy metals, and their waste is harmful to the environment.
- Certain sealers for concrete may contain solvents that aren’t safe for food preparation. Always select food-grade sealants.
These materials should be handled with care, and it’s important to wear the proper safety gear.
And keep in mind that concrete is incredibly heavy. You will be handling hundreds of pounds of material throughout the project—whether it's hauling the raw ingredients, mixing them, pouring the concrete, or installing the finished countertop.
Building a small and straightforward concrete countertop is a doable DIY project. However, constructing concrete countertops for an entire kitchen is a more complex task, particularly for those without prior experience working with concrete. Some possible challenges you may face include:
- Inconsistencies in the concrete mixture can lead to an uneven product.
- Flaws in your formwork will become visible once the concrete hardens.
- The process of mixing, curing, and finishing a concrete countertop demands ample space, time, and a controlled environment.
- Concrete countertop specialists typically keep their mixture formulas and techniques confidential.
Even with great care in crafting your concrete countertops, there are a few things that can still go wrong. For instance, you may experience ghosting, where shadows from the reinforcing rods appear on the surface. This is usually the result of inadequate vibration in the mold. Grinding the surface to expose the aggregate can help reduce the visibility of this issue.
Cracks in the concrete countertops can occur due to excessive water in the mix or evaporation of moisture in hot, dry conditions. Another common issue is efflorescence, a white powdery deposit that forms on the surface of concrete. Additionally, water stains may appear from discolorations caused by water pooling beneath the concrete or leaking through the mold.
Although concrete is highly porous, a well-built and properly sealed countertop should be resistant to moisture and free of any pits or pinholes that could trap bacteria. According to a 1999 study by the Hospitality Institute of Technology and Management, the resistance of concrete countertops to bacterial contamination when cleaned with dish detergent and water is comparable to stainless steel and far superior to wood, laminate, and tile surfaces [source: Hospitality Institute of Technology and Management]. Cleaning with vinegar kills more bacteria than soap and water, but the acid in vinegar can break down the wax sealants commonly used on concrete countertops.
Recently, some news outlets have reported that granite countertops may emit unsafe levels of radon, a colorless, odorless gas linked to lung cancer. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, radon "originates from the natural breakdown of uranium, which is present in most soils," and it does not consider kitchen countertops to be a major contributor to indoor radon levels. The primary source of radon in homes is generally from the ground through cracks in the foundation. If you're thinking about switching to concrete countertops due to concerns about radon, note that concrete also contains natural materials that can emit radon gas.
Environmental Implications of Concrete Countertops
The extraction of limestone, a crucial component of cement, can disturb local ecosystems and wildlife habitats.From an environmental perspective, concrete countertops present a complex mix of both positive and negative impacts.
On the negative side, concrete production requires large quantities of cement, and the manufacturing process is energy-intensive, as it involves high-temperature heating of limestone and other materials. Cement production contributes significantly to carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, accounting for as much as 10% of global CO2 output [sources: van Oss and Brehm]. The extraction of materials such as limestone, sand, clay, and aggregates disrupts ecosystems, creating large pits in the earth. Additionally, the process uses enormous amounts of fresh water, over 2.2 trillion pounds (1 gigaton) annually [source: van Oss].
Certain pigments used in concrete, such as chromium oxide and cobalt blue, contain heavy metals that can pose significant health risks and contaminate soil, water, and food supplies. Moreover, acid stains and sealants can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the atmosphere, which can contribute to respiratory issues and exacerbate ozone formation in the Earth's atmosphere.
On the flip side, concrete countertops are incredibly durable and are unlikely to need replacement for several generations. With proper care, they can last up to 75 years. When it comes time to replace them, the countertops can be recycled for new uses or crushed into aggregate for new concrete mixes.
As concrete plays such an essential role in modern life, various organizations are striving to mitigate its environmental effects. The Concrete Countertops Institute advocates for the use of waste materials as substitutes for aggregate and cement. Engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are exploring ways to restructure the nanoparticles in concrete to decrease CO2 emissions. Additionally, the U.S. Army has developed a technology that allows concrete to resist water without the need for harmful sealants.
The U.S. Army has introduced Electro-Osmotic Pulse (EOP) technology to protect concrete basement walls in military housing from water infiltration and mold issues. This electricity-based method eliminates the need for traditional waterproofing materials that contain hazardous chemicals. Instead, low-voltage direct current (DC) pulses push moisture out of the walls, preventing water from entering the buildings.
