While what you wear does count, it’s far from the only factor. Your abilities—your skills, personality, experience, intelligence, and curiosity—are equally crucial, and your attire should serve to accentuate these traits by helping you feel comfortable, confident, and ready for the role.
Ideally, your interview outfit should be clean, polished, and professional—more formal than you might expect—but without being too distracting, excessive, or out of place. To guide us in choosing the perfect interview look, we turn to Kim Perell, an entrepreneur, angel investor, bestselling author, and tech CEO.
Why Your Interview Attire is Important
It leaves a lasting first impression.
First impressions are often influenced by surface-level details—and your outfit is a key factor. According to Perell, "Your interview attire is the first impression you'll give and will set the tone for your interviewer."
It demonstrates confidence, respect, and thoughtfulness.
"When you show your interviewer that you've put time and care into your appearance, it signals that you’re serious about the job and that you understand the [office] culture," Perell explains. "Most importantly, dressing appropriately will give you a boost of confidence. Not only will people take you more seriously, but you'll feel more at ease as well."
It sets the stage for you to impress in other ways.
"Your interview attire should present you as polished, confident, and professional, but not steal the spotlight from your interview," Perell advises. In other words, aim for an outfit that your interviewer will almost overlook—something that’s perfectly balanced and doesn’t distract from your amazing self. You want them to remember you, not your outfit.
What to Wear for Your Interview
The Outfit
Chances are, you already have the perfect interview outfit in your wardrobe, so splurging on a workwear shopping spree may not be necessary. Perell suggests, "Typically, a black dress or suit with heels works for nearly every job interview." It's a timeless look you can adapt for various settings, depending on your accessories. Whether it’s an interview, a meeting, or dinner, a black dress and heels will never let you down.
The Finishing Touches
Perell generally recommends aiming for a knee-length dress with long sleeves (unless it's summer, in which case short sleeves are just fine). This classic combo can be easily adjusted to fit the industry and role you're interviewing for. For a more laid-back company or industry, consider skipping the jacket and opting for wide-leg culottes, a tucked-in blouse, and block heels, loafers, or ballet flats. If you’re interviewing at a more formal corporate setting, a traditional black or navy shift dress or pantsuit will be your best choice.
Interview Hair
The days of perfectly straight, flat hair or a flawless blowout being mandatory for job interviews are behind us. When it comes to your hair, go with what feels comfortable—but make sure it’s polished. Even if it’s just smoothing it out with a brush or adding a clip or bobby pin to keep stray strands in place. "Personally, I feel most confident when my hair is down," Perell shares. "But if you decide to put it up, make sure it looks intentional and neat, not just thrown together because you ran out of time."
Make it Work for You.
Take Perell's ideal interview outfit as a starting point. Not a fan of dresses? Go for navy blue or black trousers paired with a crisp, white shirt. If heels aren’t your thing, opt for sleek black flats or loafers that make you feel confident. "The biggest mistake would be not wearing what makes you feel most comfortable and confident," she says. "At the end of the day, I always recommend dressing in what makes you feel at ease, because that’s when you’ll be your most confident."
