These include eating a balanced diet, staying physically active, nurturing close relationships, and ensuring adequate hydration. Interestingly, hydration, often overlooked, is emerging as a key factor in healthy aging. This article explores the vital connection between hydration and longevity.
What’s the Relationship Between Hydration and Longevity?
Given the proven advantages of staying hydrated, the risks of dehydration, and the growing evidence connecting hydration to longevity, there are numerous reasons to adopt hydration as a simple yet powerful strategy for supporting healthy aging.
The Importance of Hydration
Water, or hydration, has a profound impact on nearly every part of the body, which makes sense considering how much of our bodies are composed of this essential element. “Approximately 60 percent of the human body is water,” notes Kristen Carli, MS, RD.
Proper hydration, which means consuming more fluids than your body loses through processes like breathing, sweating, and urination, is crucial for supporting numerous vital bodily functions. “Staying hydrated is essential for cognitive performance, maintaining energy, and enhancing physical endurance,” Carli adds.
Moreover, water in the body plays a key role in facilitating cell communication, lubricating joints, eliminating toxins and waste, producing saliva, maintaining gut microbiome balance, preventing constipation, ensuring digestive regularity, regulating body temperature, delivering oxygen, improving blood circulation, aiding nutrient metabolism and absorption, and supporting liver and kidney health.
Dehydration and Aging
To age gracefully, it’s essential that all these critical bodily functions operate optimally for as long as possible. When dehydration occurs—where water loss exceeds intake—we not only experience immediate effects but also risk long-term consequences if not addressed quickly. “Dehydration can cause fatigue, confusion, muscle cramps, and other health problems,” explains Carli. Other common symptoms include headaches, migraines, insomnia, dizziness, mood changes, weakened immunity, constipation, gas, and bloating. Severe dehydration can lead to even more serious issues like low blood pressure, kidney failure, and seizures.
These effects can also hinder or even prevent us from participating in other healthy habits that are crucial for promoting longevity.
Proper Hydration and Longevity
Beyond the clear benefits of proper hydration for longevity (and the risks of dehydration), scientific research also supports this connection.
“Research, such as this 2023 cohort study featured in eBioMedicine, indicates that dehydration might lead to inflammation, cellular aging, and oxidative stress, all of which can speed up the body’s aging process,” Carli notes. Earlier studies, including a 2010 article in the European Journal of Physiology, support this view, highlighting that adequate hydration enhances mitochondrial function and helps maintain weight, lowering the risk of chronic conditions like obesity, kidney disease, hypertension, cancer, and diabetes—conditions that often shorten lifespan.”
“On the flip side, maintaining hydration can support healthy blood pressure, kidney function, and heart health, all of which contribute to a longer, healthier life,” Carli adds. This is likely tied to the numerous health benefits of water and hydration, particularly its role in promoting healthy blood flow, allowing vital organs to function optimally without the strain caused by dehydration.”
How to Stay Hydrated
Given this evidence, it’s clear that staying hydrated is a key strategy for enhancing longevity. Unfortunately, many Americans, particularly older adults, are often dehydrated without realizing it. A 2023 study published in Clinical Nutrition found that 25 percent of their 22,398 older adult participants were dehydrated.
Fortunately, there are simple, effective ways to avoid dehydration over the long term. “Drinking water regularly throughout the day is one of the most effective methods. Instead of waiting until you feel thirsty—a sign that mild dehydration may already be occurring—make it a routine to drink water consistently,” Carli advises.
If water isn’t your preferred drink, there are plenty of tasty hydration alternatives that can also support longevity. Fluid requirements vary depending on factors like age, activity level, and health conditions, but a general guideline is to consume at least eight to 12 cups (64 to 96 fluid ounces) of unsweetened, caffeine-free beverages daily.
“In addition to drinking water and other hydrating drinks, incorporating hydrating foods such as cucumbers, oranges, melons, and soups into your meals can help you stay hydrated. These water-rich foods provide both fluids and vital nutrients, enhancing overall hydration and health,” Carli suggests.
