As the seasons change, you're probably on the hunt for new swimwear for your rapidly growing children. However, before you settle on darker shades, Natalie Livingston, a lifeguard and co-founder of Alive Solutions, a water safety consulting and education firm, suggests choosing swimsuits in bright neon colors – hues that are easily visible in emergencies.

“Being able to see a child clearly is crucial for recognizing drowning incidents,” Livingston explained. “Many parents were picking swimwear that was stylish and adorable but could make their children nearly invisible underwater.”
In 2020, Livingston and Alive Solutions carried out an informal study to test how visible different colored swimsuits were in pools with light bottoms, dark bottoms, and in lakes. They found that neon pink and neon orange were the most visible in light-bottomed pools, while neon orange, neon green, and neon yellow were the most noticeable in dark-bottomed pools and lakes (neon pink didn't fare as well in these environments).
They noted that blues, whites, and pastel colors provide the least contrast and are therefore much less safe.
It’s crucial to remember that these “safe” swimsuit colors won’t be effective without additional safety measures.
For optimal water safety, the American Academy of Pediatrics advocates for a multi-layered strategy. Along with dressing your child in a highly visible swimsuit, you should recognize the signs of drowning, install fencing around home pools, enroll kids in swimming lessons, and always keep young children within arm's reach of an adult. (Alternatively, they should wear a life jacket, as recommended by the National Drowning Prevention Alliance.)
Other water safety experts suggest that adults take turns in 15-minute intervals to actively watch children when at the pool, lake, or beach.
