Platforms like Instagram and TikTok only add to the pressure of staying on top of the latest trends, which can be overwhelming. But this isn't always a bad thing. After all, everyone could use new ideas to keep their homes tidy. Here are the top home organization trends of 2024, according to pro organizers.
Horizontal Storage for Water Bottles
Hydration has evolved from a healthy habit to a TikTok sensation, especially with the rise of Stanley Cups. The challenge, however, is figuring out where to store all those trendy bottles. Lindsey Mahanna, a professional organizer and the founder of Clutter to Clarity, suggests that one of the major organization trends to come from this hydration craze is horizontal water bottle storage. Mahanna is a fan of this solution: 'It works perfectly for standard-sized water bottles and maximizes cabinet space,' she says. 'This method solves the problem of water bottles getting lost at the back of kitchen cabinets and makes them more accessible, especially for shorter individuals.'
Organizing racks are especially useful for larger water bottles like Stanley and Hydro Flask. 'Try using horizontal storage for part of your kitchen cabinet, leaving the rest of the shelf open for taller bottles that require more vertical space. I recommend the Youcopia water bottle organizer,' Mahanna advises.
Micro Decluttering
Briana and Erica Spruille, professional organizers and co-founders of the home organizing company Just BE LLC, have noticed that micro decluttering is becoming increasingly popular. 'We love the idea of micro decluttering as a self-care practice,' says Briana Spruille. 'Decluttering is essential, but it can be overwhelming if you try to do it all at once.'
Micro decluttering involves focusing on a single area, such as a drawer, cabinet, countertop, or dresser top. The Spruilles recommend concentrating on just that space during each decluttering session. This approach is ideal for anyone with limited time. Try choosing a different spot each day, and soon your entire home will be clutter-free. 'It provides a sense of accomplishment without the stress,' says Erica Spruille.
More Conscious Consumerism
Although decluttering costs nothing, purchasing organizers can be quite costly. On the bright side, prices have dropped recently as more products hit the market to keep pace with current trends. However, this isn’t always a good thing, according to the Spruilles. Some budget-friendly options are poorly made or not designed well. 'In the end, you end up throwing them away and buying a higher-quality version,' Briana Spruille explains.
But that doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune. 'If possible, buy from various sources based on what you need—smaller items like bathroom organizers or drawer dividers can be found at lower prices. But larger items, such as shelving units or storage for tools and heavy clothing, might require a more durable, higher-end product.'
The One-Hour Cleaning Method
Professional organizer Eryn Donaldson shares that the one-hour cleaning method has taken TikTok by storm this year. 'It involves breaking cleaning and organizing tasks into smaller, more manageable chunks, usually completed within an hour,' she says. 'The goal is to maintain tidiness without feeling overwhelmed.'
She believes it’s perfect for DIY projects or for maintaining the work of professional organizers once their tasks are completed. 'Allocating a solid hour for cleaning, decluttering, or organizing can be very productive,' Donaldson explains. 'However, I typically suggest setting aside 10 to 30 minutes daily or every other day instead of a full hour, because everyone can find 10 to 30 minutes, and it's easier to stay focused on decluttering for a shorter period.'
Eco-Friendly Organizing Products
While most plastic organizing products aren't great for the planet, there’s a growing movement to change that. 'As environmental awareness increases, there's a stronger demand for eco-friendly organizing solutions,' says Donaldson. 'These products are crafted from sustainable materials like bamboo, recycled plastics, or natural fibers. I really appreciate the eco-friendly options, especially the bamboo and glass canisters. I use these in my own home as well as for many of my clients who want to decant pantry items.'
Rolling Carts
When it comes to staying organized, 'keep it rolling' is a great approach, according to Donaldson. 'Rolling carts are becoming increasingly popular due to their versatility,' she says. 'They can be used in kitchens, nurseries, bathrooms, or offices. These carts offer mobility and come in various designs to suit different needs and spaces.'
Rolling carts are especially helpful when there’s a lack of built-in storage or when items need to be moved between different areas of the home.
Decanting Everything
While decanting has been a prominent trend in recent years, it’s more popular than ever in 2024. 'Decanting not only improves the appearance of your pantry but also makes it easier to spot items that are running low,' says Donaldson. 'I’m a huge fan of decanting kitchen staples because it helps them stay fresh longer in the pantry or cabinet than if they’re left in their original packaging. Plus, it’s much easier to tell if you’re running low on something.'
