They’re like a ‘high maintenance for low maintenance’ treatment, minimizing your daily routine while ensuring you look great as soon as you wake up (even if you didn’t get a full night’s sleep). Not sure if this beauty investment is right for you? We’re breaking down everything you need to know about lash extensions, from costs and upkeep to care tips that help extend their wear.
What’s the Price of Lash Extensions?
The price of eyelash extensions varies based on several key factors, including your location, the type of lashes used, and the pricing of the salon or technician. (Lash artists who are in high demand typically charge more, but their expertise is worth it!)
“Typically, a full set of eyelash extensions can cost between $100 to $300 or more,” says cosmetologist Amanda Pichardo. “Fill-in or touch-up sessions are usually more affordable, ranging from $50 to $150.”
What’s the Process for Applying Lash Extensions?
Plan for about two hours for your initial lash extension session. Once you're lying comfortably on a table or reclining chair, the technician will start by gently cleaning your lashes to remove makeup, debris, and oil. Then, they will use a specialized, eye-safe adhesive to attach individual lashes one by one along your upper lash line.
Your eyes will remain closed throughout the appointment as the technician applies the extensions, so it's a good idea to relax and get as comfortable as possible. It may feel a bit unusual at first, but the process becomes familiar as it goes on. When it’s all done, you’ll have a full set of fluttering lashes. Depending on your desired look, you can choose the length, thickness, and curl of your lashes.
How Long Do Lash Extensions Typically Last?
Pichardo notes that lash extensions generally last between four to six weeks, depending on factors like your lash growth cycle, natural oil production, and how well you maintain them.
“As your natural lashes shed, the extensions will gradually fall off as well,” Pichardo explains. She also points out that oil, makeup, and frequent eye rubbing can weaken the adhesive, causing the extensions to shed faster.
To keep your lashes looking fresh, Pichardo recommends scheduling light touch-up appointments every two to three weeks. During these visits, your lash artist will replace any fallen extensions to keep your lashes looking full and stunning.
Is It Okay to Wear Makeup With Lash Extensions?
Yes, you can wear makeup with lash extensions. However, you'll need to make a few adjustments to your regular routine to keep them in perfect condition. Pichardo advises avoiding mascaras (which you probably won’t need anyway) since they can be difficult to remove and may cause the lash glue to break down. Also, steer clear of any eye makeup that’s water or oil-based, as these can weaken the glue faster.
How to Maintain Your Lash Extensions
Along with the makeup tips mentioned earlier, here are a few additional maintenance steps to ensure your lash extensions last between salon visits.
- Skip eyelash curlers as they can damage or break the extensions, Pichardo cautions. If you prefer curled lashes, choose extensions with a natural curl or bend.
- Be extra gentle when washing your face. Avoid scrubbing or rubbing, and use an oil-free cleanser to avoid degrading the lash adhesive.
- Avoid rubbing your eyes as it can loosen or damage the extensions.
- Clean your extensions and eyelids gently every day with an oil-free, alcohol-free cleanser. A cotton pad works well to remove oil, dirt, and debris.
- Comb your lashes daily to avoid tangling, which can happen, especially with longer lashes.
- Use a silk pillowcase. Pichardo recommends using a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction and rubbing on your lashes while sleeping.
- Avoid saunas and long, hot showers. The steam can weaken the lash glue, causing the extensions to fall out sooner.
