During the summer months, preventing your patio umbrella from being swept away by gusty winds can be tricky. Although traditional bases can keep your umbrella stable, they often limit mobility and adjustments. If you desire a unique, visually appealing, and easily movable solution to anchor your umbrella by the pool or on the patio, this project is ideal.
Essential tools and materials for crafting a rolling umbrella planter stand
To complete this project, gather the following items:
A permanent marker
A drill
A ¼“ drill bit
4 casters
16 bolts
16 lock washers
16 nuts
A pair of 7/16” box wrenches or a 7/16” box wrench and a 7/16” nut driver bit for your drill
A 2-gallon bucket with a lid
A galvanized steel tub or wine barrel planter
An umbrella
Concrete mix
A piece of 1 ½“ PVC pipe at 30” painted to your choice of color with spray paint for plastic
Potting soil
Utility knife
Scriber or a scratch awl
Additionally, select plants that thrive in containers and can grow well in shaded or partially shaded areas, as they will be positioned beneath your umbrella.
Step-by-step guide to creating a rolling umbrella plant stand
After gathering all your materials, turn your container upside down so the base is on top. Measure two inches from the edge of the base and mark evenly spaced points for attaching the casters. Use a caster as a template to mark the drilling spots, then create the holes using your drill and drill bit. For metal surfaces, scoring the center of each hole with a scriber or scratch awl will help guide the drill bit.
Secure the casters using bolts, ensuring the nuts are on the inside of the container. Place the lock washers on the nut side of the bolts and tighten them with your box wrenches or wrench and nut driver. Apply enough tension to the lock washers to prevent loosening during use.
To set up your umbrella, position the 2-gallon bucket inside the container and prepare the PVC pipe. Trace a circle on the bucket lid using the PVC pipe, then carefully cut it out with a utility knife. Mix the concrete according to the package instructions and pour it into the bucket. Insert the PVC pipe into the center of the bucket and secure it by placing the lid on top, ensuring the pipe stays upright as the concrete sets. Create small vent holes in the lid to facilitate drying. Once the concrete is firm enough to support the pipe, remove the lid gently to let it finish curing. Meanwhile, drill drainage holes in the bottom of your container.
After the concrete has completely hardened, fill the container with potting soil, ensuring the bucket is covered. Insert your umbrella into the PVC pipe, add your chosen plants, and your new rolling umbrella stand is ready for use.
