Photo by: Greg DupreeMaking your own cranberry sauce is a must for Thanksgiving. It’s an easy recipe with big rewards and can be prepared up to a week ahead. This version stands out with its chutney-like twist, thanks to the apple chunks nestled in the smooth sauce.
The addition of maple syrup gives it a rich sweetness that perfectly balances the tart cranberries—both dried and fresh. This cranberry sauce takes any dish to the next level and deserves a place on your holiday table.
Note that the sauce thickens as it cools. If you prefer a thinner sauce, cook for a shorter time and remove it from the heat while it’s still saucy. For a thicker, jelly-like consistency, cook it for a few extra minutes.
Ingredients Needed
-
12 oz fresh or frozen cranberries (roughly 2 3/4 cups)
-
3/4 cup sweetened dried cranberries
-
1/2 cup plus 2 Tbsp pure maple syrup
-
1/8 tsp kosher salt
-
1 cup chopped red apple, cut into 1/2-inch pieces (from one apple, like Gala or Honeycrisp)
How to Prepare
-
In a medium saucepan, combine cranberries, apples, dried cranberries, maple syrup, 1⁄4 cup water, and salt. Bring the mixture to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally; cover and let it simmer undisturbed for 10 minutes, adjusting the heat as needed to maintain the simmer.
-
Remove the lid and continue cooking over medium heat, stirring frequently, until the cranberries burst, the apples become tender, and the mixture thickens but remains saucy, for about 6 to 10 minutes. (It will thicken further as it cools, so aim for a saucier consistency.) Serve either warm or at room temperature.
If you happen to have any leftovers (lucky you!), try spooning a dollop over creamy, thick yogurt for an excellent breakfast.
