Whether it's a headboard, dresser, table, or bookcase, your home likely features multiple wooden pieces. While high-quality wood furniture is built to endure and maintain its appeal, scratches can diminish its aesthetic value.
We consulted two experts to uncover easy DIY techniques for eliminating scratches from wooden furniture. Continue reading to choose the best approach for your needs.
Water
Surprisingly, water could be the solution to erasing scratches from your wooden furniture. “Start by using a slightly damp microfiber cloth with warm water,” suggests Alessandro Gazzo from Emily’s Maids. He advises gently dabbing the scratched area to test its effectiveness.
Lemon/Lemon Juice
Geoff Waler, superintendent at ASAP Restoration, notes that minor scratches can occasionally be fixed with lemon juice. “It seems to dissolve the scratch and blend it seamlessly, though the science behind it might require a chemist’s explanation. Still, it’s worth a try,” he explains. Clean the surface, apply lemon juice to a microfiber cloth, and gently rub the scratches for a few minutes. Alternatively, you can use the lemon directly. The scratches should fade; if not, repeat the process.
Filler Pens and Markers
Using furniture repair kits with markers or pens is one of the simplest methods to eliminate scratches from wooden furniture. “These pens are available in various colors and quality levels, making them a versatile solution for medium scratches,” Waler explains. For instance, a set of 6 to 13 markers might include shades like oak, maple, cherry, mahogany, walnut, and black. To use them, clean the scratched area, apply the marker over the scratch, and remove any excess.
Walnuts
Walnuts aren’t just a healthy snack—they can also help repair scratches. Gazzo suggests rubbing a walnut kernel over the scratch to release its natural oils. “These oils can ‘melt’ into the surface, potentially removing the scratch,” he notes. Simply rub the kernel on the affected area and wipe away any residue with a paper towel.
Waler also highlights the effectiveness of walnut dust. “Walnut dust can fill in small scratches by depositing tiny shavings into the gaps, effectively repairing the damage,” he adds.
Beeswax
Gazzo also suggests using beeswax as an effective remedy. Apply a small quantity of beeswax to the scratch and then gently remove any surplus.
Shoe Polish
Shoe polish can be a handy solution for scratches if you can find a shade that matches the wood. Apply it directly to the scratch and wipe off any extra polish.
Furniture Cleaners
Commercial cleaners are another viable option. Gazzo recommends products like Trade Secret Scratch Concealer, a coconut oil-based cleaner available in light and dark wood variants, specifically designed to hide scratches and nicks. Shake the bottle, apply it to the affected area, and wipe away any excess with a cloth.
Gazzo also endorses the Tibet Almond Stick, a tightly-wound cotton stick infused with a unique formula. It’s colorless and works by rubbing the stick over scratches before wiping it clean with a cloth.
Furniture polish is another effective solution. Waler mentions it can address small to medium scratches. A well-known brand, Old English, offers scratch cover products for both light and dark wood. Besides concealing scratches, it cleans, conditions, and adds shine to wooden surfaces.
For deeper scratches or significant damage to wooden furniture, it’s advisable to seek help from a professional furniture repair and restoration service.
