By adopting a few smart habits, you can avoid wrinkles altogether, saving time and effort. Here are practical tips to ensure your clothes stay neat, eliminating the need for constant ironing.
Choose the Right Washing Machine Setting
Zachary Pozniak, COO of Jeeves New York, highlights that selecting the appropriate washing cycle is a simple yet effective method to avoid wrinkles. “Natural fabrics like cotton work well with normal or express cycles, while synthetics and delicate items benefit from permanent press or delicate cycles,” he explains. “These settings reduce mechanical action and slower spin speeds, minimizing creases.”
Select the Ideal Dryer Setting
Hannah Yokoji, marketing head at The Laundress, emphasizes that using the correct dryer cycle can prevent wrinkles from forming. “Always refer to the garment’s care label and choose a drying cycle suited to the fabric,” she advises. “For instance, cotton can handle higher heat and spin, whereas delicate fabrics need a gentle, no-heat setting.”
Avoid Overloading Your Dryer
If your washing machine is larger than your dryer, you might be tempted to overfill the dryer, leading to less-than-ideal results. “Overcrowding prevents clothes from moving freely, which is essential for effective wrinkle removal,” Yokoji notes.
Skip Timed Dryer Settings
Using timed dryer cycles might seem practical, but it often leads to over-drying your clothes. Pozniak advises against timed drying and suggests opting for sensor-based tumble dry cycles instead. “Modern dryers are equipped with moisture sensors that halt the drying process when most moisture is removed,” he explains. “This not only prevents over-drying but also reduces static, which occurs only when garments are completely dry.”
Opt for Dryer Balls
Replace disposable dryer sheets with wool or acrylic dryer balls. “These prevent clothes from clumping together and are particularly effective for bulky items like bedding, coats, and towels,” Pozniak recommends.
Remove Clothes Before They’re Fully Dry
Pozniak recommends removing wrinkle-prone items from the dryer while they are still slightly damp. “This helps avoid static and creases,” he notes. Afterward, you can hang these garments to finish drying naturally.
Reshape Your Clothing
Even clothes dried on a hanger can develop wrinkles. However, Yokoji shares a simple solution. “When air-drying, gently press and reshape garments with your hands before hanging or laying them flat for a smoother finish.”
Use a Fabric Spray
Despite your best efforts, some fabrics are naturally prone to wrinkling. In such cases, Yokoji suggests using a specialized fabric spray. These wrinkle-releasing sprays add moisture to the fabric, smoothing out creases quickly and effectively, especially when you’re short on time.
