Still waiting for your coronavirus relief check? You could speed up the process—but you must act fast: If you want to receive your payment by direct deposit, you have until Wednesday, May 13, at noon (local time) to submit your information. You can do this on the Get My Payment site provided by the IRS. You’ll need to provide your Social Security number and date of birth, and possibly details from your most recent tax return.
If you don’t provide your direct deposit details by noon on May 13, you’ll have to wait for a paper check to arrive by mail. The IRS has already sent out around 130 million payments, but later this month, it will mainly rely on paper checks to distribute the remaining stimulus payments of up to $1,200.
These checks will be mailed based on the adjusted gross income (AGI) listed on your tax return, according to this schedule.
The online Get My Payment tool has been available since mid-April, but many users who tried it soon after its launch faced difficulties in accessing it to check their payment status.
If you had trouble checking your status or entering your direct deposit details, you might have given up, assuming you’d eventually receive your check by mail. However, the IRS has since updated the system, meaning you’re now much less likely to encounter an error when trying to access the portal.
