Breakthrough technologies are emerging, and those on the horizon are some of the most fascinating developments to date. Law enforcement technology continues to make tremendous advancements, with some innovations literally changing the game (as you'll see in number 3).
10. Sounds and Smells
Stink bombs? Yes, really. The first generation of sound and scent-based riot deterrents are already in use, boasting an impressive track record and several high-profile successful deployments. For instance, last year, pirates attempting to board a civilian cruise ship in one of the most perilous waterways in the world were thwarted by a sound-producing device originally designed to keep birds away from sensitive areas. These machines emit highly concentrated sound waves aimed at potential threats, rendering them temporarily incapacitated as they instinctively cover their ears. Known as the Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD – pictured above), this equipment serves as an effective and accurate tool for riot control and building defense. It produces a 95+ decibel sound, causing immediate disorientation and forcing the target to abandon their aggressive stance. Future iterations will feature extended ranges, broader sound coverage, and more intense projection. Alongside other emerging technologies like scent-based deterrents, which can induce vomiting, disorientation, sensory overload, and a desire to retreat, this technology promises to be an efficient tool for managing riots or securing high-risk areas. Scent-based deterrents are currently undergoing trials to replace traditional methods like high-pressure water hoses and rubber or bean bag projectiles. Scents such as skunk, feces, and even some less-than-pleasant chemicals can incapacitate or demoralize targets, often breaking their resolve. The unique property of smell allows it to both build and dismantle barriers, depending on how it's used.
9. Metabolic Enhancers
The future of energy science extends to supplements designed for human consumption, which could be tailored to meet the energy demands of soldiers or law enforcement officers based on available resources. Imagine the incredible advantage of not having to focus on meeting basic human needs, allowing future officers to push their limits. By controlling the flow of energy within their bodies, agents and officers could potentially be faster, stronger, smarter, and more enduring than their adversaries. It’s somewhat like a performance booster for the entire body. Products and techniques aimed at genetically re-engineering metabolism not only sound like a dream for anyone battling weight issues, but they could also allow soldiers, officers, and agents to operate at peak performance without the need for food or even the worry of eating for extended periods. While it may sound like science fiction, progress is already being made. Respected labs have made significant strides in developing injections that can alter human metabolic functions.

The future of border enforcement and drug control could be shaped by unmanned drones and robots, offering law enforcement the ability to conduct surveillance and complete missions without placing officers in danger or introducing the risks of human error. 7. OICW Rifle
Following a fierce standoff in Los Angeles, California, where law enforcement had to borrow weapons from local gun shops to counter heavily armed bank robbers, agencies began to incorporate military-grade weapons systems as standard issue. The OICW XM-8 and XM-29 will be the next in line for this adoption when they enter production. The OICW project, initiated in the late 1990s to replace the aging M-16/M-4 rifles, has faced delays and redesigns. A collaborative effort between Heckler & Koch and the U.S. Department of Defense, the OICW is expected to be released by late 2012.
