While Led Zeppelin’s “Rock and Roll” might not be your go-to for bedtime, classic rock offers a range of gentler tunes. A recent study by Mornings.co.uk highlights the best tracks to include in your sleep playlist.
Researchers analyzed 100 lullabies across 10 criteria, including tempo, time signature, scale type, and vocal presence, to determine what makes an effective sleep song. Using this data, they developed a scoring system to rank songs based on their lullaby-like qualities.
Elton John’s “Your Song” topped the list with 81 out of 100 points, followed by Led Zeppelin’s “Going to California” and John’s “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters” in third place.
Given that Paul McCartney explicitly sings, “Sleep, pretty darling, do not cry / And I will sing a lullaby” in The Beatles’ “Golden Slumbers,” it’s no wonder this calming track secured a spot on the list. It ranks fourth, seamlessly transitioning into “Carry That Weight” on Abbey Road.
Other relaxing classic rock songs feature artists like Pink Floyd, Lou Reed, and more. Explore the top 10 tracks below and check out Mornings.co.uk’s genre-specific sleep playlists—spanning country to hip-hop—here.
