Humans have always been captivated by wild creatures, constantly seeking ways to interact from a safe distance. Whether it's by visiting zoos to view them behind fences and glass barriers—thanks to our fear of becoming prey to lions or panthers—or going to aquariums to observe sharks, stingrays, and octopuses through thick glass, we rarely consider getting too close to these wild beings, especially in their natural habitat or our homes.
Throughout the years, we've encountered chilling accounts of individuals being attacked by lions, crocodiles, bears, and more. We've also heard complaints about iguanas devouring gardens or squirrels wreaking havoc on flower beds. From our viewpoint, wild animals are best observed from a distance. But these ten individuals certainly see things in a different light.
10. Butter the Opossum

While many people have a negative perception of opossums, labeling them as oversized rodents that rummage through trash at night in search of food, this isn't an accurate portrayal. Though they may scavenge occasionally, opossums are not part of the rodent family and are far from the fearsome creatures they're often made out to be. In fact, they are quite the opposite of the menacing image many have of them.
When faced with danger, opossums often freeze and appear lifeless, a reaction triggered by intense fear, as their bodies go into shock. These creatures belong to the marsupial order Didelphimorphia and, despite their somewhat unsettling behavior, are surprisingly affectionate. A woman named Stephanie, who appeared on 'The Dodo,' shared her experience after rescuing a baby opossum, the sole survivor of an incident where his mother tragically fell. She nursed him back to health in her home, and he grew to trust her deeply.
Though Stephanie initially intended to release the opossum back into the wild, he had other plans. The baby opossum, whom she named Butter, became increasingly attached to her, resisting any attempt to part ways. After numerous efforts to acclimate him to the outdoors, Butter always returned to her, excited to greet her with affectionate kisses and ‘slubs.’
9. Kojek the Crocodile

Following the terrifying attack on a man by an alligator in Brazil on October 23, 2021, many people might think, 'There’s no way I’d ever have one of these creatures near me, let alone keep one as a pet!' Yet, in Indonesia, a man would likely challenge this notion, having lived with his crocodile for over two decades—alongside his wife and children.
Irwan had saved the tiny 10-centimeter (4-inch) crocodile from a group of boys who were tormenting it. He paid the boys’ fishermen fathers for the crocodile and brought it home, where he cared for it for 21 years. He fed it two kilos (4.5 pounds) of fish twice a week, cleaned its water weekly, and even bathed it in soapy water. Over time, Irwan's family came to view the crocodile, named Kojek, as a beloved member of the household, and they felt entirely secure around him.
In 2018, a conservation group intervened and relocated the 200 kg (450 pounds) crocodile from Irwan's home, as the massive creature had grown too large. Kojek now resides in the Taman Safari conservation park in Bogor, where he is being monitored and placed on a carefully controlled diet. Though no longer living with his family, Irwan still makes occasional visits to see his old companion at the park.
Who needs skydiving when you can experience an adrenaline rush just by taking in a crocodile as a pet?
8. JB the Beaver

If you ever find yourself facing a water leak at home, don’t worry—just call JB the beaver to build a dam right on the spot. Meet JB, or rather, Justin Beaver, a beaver rescued by a woman running a wildlife rescue center in Kentucky. She found him abandoned and alone, without his mother, and took him in.
Now, JB spends his days gathering various items from around the house to build forts, continuing his natural instincts even in his new home. He requires access to clean water three to four times a day and still enjoys his favorite tree branches along with a special treat: sweet potatoes. With a newly built outdoor pond made just for him, JB is now living the dream of a North American beaver.
7. Gypsy & Monaco the Bobcats

If the thought of having a lion in your house is too overwhelming, why not opt for a bobcat instead? That's exactly what a couple in Texas did when they decided to welcome two bobcats—Gypsy and Monaco—into their home. A traditional house cat just wouldn’t suffice. These bobcats are being spoiled with a rich diet of various meats and have a unique way of keeping things clean—they use the toilet instead of a litter box!
The two bobcats are incredibly affectionate, and the couple hasn’t had any trouble with damage to their furniture. Melissa and Mark have only experienced minor scratches and a few scabs. Having cared for multiple animals from different species over the years, they share that the bond they have with these bobcats is the deepest they’ve ever felt. Since bobcats can live up to 30 years, this family is in it for the long term.
6. Toby the Pig

While millions of Americans enjoy bacon as part of their breakfast routine, bacon wasn’t on the menu for this couple. During a visit to a dog kennel, they found a rescue pig named Toby. He had escaped from a farm and was severely attacked by dogs. The sight of this 500-pound pig, sickly and in distress, broke their hearts. They immediately felt a deep connection to him and decided to bring him home, where they began nursing him back to health.
As Toby recovered, the couple formed a deep bond with him, spending time with him every day and providing the strength he needed to overcome his pain. Slowly, Toby regained his energy and began venturing outside to enjoy the freedom and care he had always deserved. Today, Toby is a much more lively and content pig, feeling secure in his new home and surrounded by his loving family.
5. Jimmy the Bear

When campers across America are preparing for their outdoor adventures, they’re careful to pack a bear bag to keep the animals at bay. But one couple did the opposite, choosing instead to welcome bears into their lives. Meet the Kodiak bear family from Otisville, New York.
This family runs a wildlife rescue, and in 2016, they were the proud caretakers of 11 bears, treating them like their own children. Their biggest bear, Jimmy, weighed an astounding 1,400 pounds and had been with them since he was a cub. The family feeds their bears a varied diet of berries, baby elk, salmon, and grains. Despite their immense strength and lethal potential, Jim and Susan interact with their bears daily, playing with them and showing them respect. I think I’ll stick to my teddy bear, thanks!
4. Tiny Tim the Donkey

Meet Tiny Tim, the miniature donkey who was so small that his human mother initially thought he wouldn’t survive. After discovering that their two donkeys had mated, Jossy was shocked to find the tiny 10-pound newborn lying in some hay in the barn. Rejected by his biological mother, she took him inside, feeding him every 20 minutes by hand. Over time, Tiny Tim grew stronger and became an irreplaceable member of the family. Having a donkey, it turns out, is very similar to owning a dog—he wags his tail and even drinks from the toilet, just like his two dog companions.
Now weighing just 70 pounds, Tiny has learned to pee outside with the dogs and is fully house-trained. According to his owners, he’s easier to train than a dog! So, for anyone considering getting a puppy, maybe you should think about adopting a wild ass instead.
3. Jessica the Hippo

Jessica leads two lives: one as a beloved family member, living with her human parents, and the other as a free spirit in the waters. She comes and goes as she pleases, completely happy and deeply connected to her human family. Without a doubt, this story takes the number one spot!
And there you have it, everyone. These courageous individuals took a leap to connect with the most intimidating forces of nature, forging unforgettable, enduring bonds that will remain in our collective memories. Has this experience changed how you see things? Are you ready to venture into this rediscovered frontier, or will you stay confined behind the walls and glass of the zoo, left to ponder the 'what ifs'?

We're talking about a man who thrives on the edge, literally risking his safety while living side-by-side with these wild animals. Meet Kevin Richardson, the Lion Whisperer, a man who has truly become part of a hyena family.
Kevin must continuously prove his authority to avoid serious injuries. Having worked with large carnivores for over 15 years, he has endured countless scratches and bites from both hyenas and lions. His bond with the hyenas took many years to form, and he aims to shift people's perspectives on these often-misunderstood creatures.
Although they're hyenas, you might want to play it safe and offer a tribute to Anubis if you decide to get close to one of these wild, dog-like animals.
