Determining the world's best place to live is no simple task. One effective approach is the Global Liveability Index [PDF], a yearly report that evaluates and ranks 173 cities worldwide based on quality of life. The index assesses each city across five key areas: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. Scores are tallied to rank cities from highest to lowest in terms of livability.
Annual shifts in rankings occur as some cities climb while others fall. This year, the most liveable cities are primarily located in Europe and Canada, with one standout in Australia and another in Japan.
