Anonymous is a decentralized collective of unknown international activists, often recognized for their signature Guy Fawkes masks that conceal their identities. While the group lacks specific, formalized goals, they share a unified aim to fight against internet censorship, champion free speech, and disrupt authoritarian regimes. Without a defined membership or structure, members communicate primarily through encrypted online chats.
Although the group has a reputation for crashing websites, defacing digital pages, and leaking private information, there have been instances when Anonymous worked in the service of humanity. Here are the ten most significant times they acted to benefit the public good.
10. Revealed the Chinese Military’s Role in Cyberattacks Against the United States

One of Anonymous' most significant actions was revealing the Chinese military's involvement in a series of cyberattacks on American entities, including companies, organizations, and government agencies, in 2011. While U.S. security experts and officials had long suspected China of orchestrating the attacks, there was little evidence to support the claim. China strongly denied these accusations, citing the absence of proof.
However, Anonymous stepped in, presenting compelling evidence that linked the Chinese military to the attacks. This revelation made headlines worldwide, enabling the Obama Administration to officially hold China accountable for its malicious actions. The Chinese government faced major embarrassment, and the attacks ceased immediately.
9. Assisted in Combating Government Oppression in Iran

After the highly disputed re-election of Mahmud Ahmadinejad in 2009, the Iranian government intensified its crackdown on opposition movements online. They blocked websites critical of the regime, restricted media outlets, and interrupted mobile communications during the protests that erupted after the election.
The government-imposed censorship isolated many Iranians from the broader internet, forcing Anonymous to intervene. The group offered crucial advice on bypassing censorship and accessing the unrestricted internet. Anonymous' efforts were pivotal in supporting the Iranian people's right to free speech during the protests.
8. Challenged Government Corruption in Nigeria

In 2016, Anonymous launched a cyber attack against the Nigerian government to protest corruption and the lack of accountability from public officials. The group issued a public call for its members to take down the websites of Nigeria’s ministries of finance, foreign affairs, and justice, as well as the Federal Capital Territory Administration. Within hours, those websites were taken offline.
Anonymous cited widespread corruption among government officials, unemployment, illiteracy, and inadequate healthcare as the driving forces behind their cyber attack. The group further warned that it would continue to carry out such actions unless the Nigerian government swiftly addressed these issues.
7. Advocated for LGBT Rights in Uganda

Anonymous has used its hacking skills to advocate for LGBT rights on multiple occasions. Many countries, including 38 in Africa, have passed laws that discriminate against LGBT individuals. Among these, Uganda stands out as one of the most severe cases. Uganda was among the first African nations to propose a law that would have legalized the execution of gay individuals. First introduced in 2009, the bill became infamous as the 'kill the gays bill,' proposing the death penalty for anyone found guilty of homosexuality.
The Ugandan government's harsh treatment of LGBT people prompted Anonymous to step in. The group retaliated by hacking the Ugandan prime minister’s website in protest of the government’s stance against the LGBT community. Anonymous made it clear that it would not sit idly by while Uganda continued its abuse of LGBT citizens, warning the government that it would continue to target its websites and communications until the LGBT community was treated with the dignity and respect it deserved. The attack humiliated Uganda, leading to tightened internet security. Despite the intervention, the bill was eventually passed in 2014, sentencing homosexuality to life imprisonment rather than the death penalty.
This was not the only time Anonymous intervened to protect the LGBT community in Africa. In 2013, the group took down a Nigerian government website in response to the government's efforts to pass a law that would imprison LGBT individuals for up to 14 years.
6. Battle Against Child Pornography

One of Anonymous' notable achievements is its campaign against child pornography and exploitation. The group has fought back by exposing platforms that enabled such crimes. One significant action involved outing the owners and operators of Freedom Hosting, a company that supported child pornography and allowed pedophiles to exploit and harm children.
In December 2007, Anonymous played a role in the arrest of Chris Forcand, an internet predator and pedophile. The arrest was made possible by Anonymous members who posed as children online, gathering evidence against child molesters. After accumulating logs of explicit chats and images, the group handed the evidence over to law enforcement.
One of Anonymous' most impactful actions against child pornography was the successful cyber attack on Lolita City, a website where pedophiles could view the abuse of innocent children. Additionally, Anonymous exposed the identities of 1,500 individuals who used the site. Beyond Lolita City, the group also targeted and shut down other child pornography websites, forcing them offline. The attacks were well-documented, with Anonymous posting detailed timelines and methods on Pastebin to describe their work in tracking and dismantling the servers.
5. Led a Campaign Against Zimbabwe for Suppressing the Press

When Wikileaks published an article accusing Zimbabwe's first lady of involvement in the illicit diamond trade, a local newspaper in Zimbabwe ran the story, which led to a lawsuit by First Lady Grace Mugabe. In defense of free speech, Anonymous intervened by launching a cyber attack on Zimbabwean government websites, retaliating against the suppression of the press.
Among the hacked websites was that of the Ministry of Finance. The official website of the Zimbabwean government was also targeted. The group attributed these attacks to the Zimbabwean government's brazen censorship of the free press.
4. Supported the Arab Spring

Anonymous' opposition to authoritarian regimes reached its peak during the Arab Spring. Many Arab nations were notorious for their lack of democracy, and Anonymous took a stand during this historic movement.
During the Tunisian revolution, the government focused heavily on using the internet to suppress the opposition. The Tunisian Internet Agency manipulated web pages and arbitrarily deleted social media accounts. Additionally, it used citizens' social media data to track, locate, and arrest them. At this critical moment, Anonymous intervened, hacking the websites of the Tunisian president and prime minister. The group also posted video tutorials to help Tunisians bypass government censorship.
In response to the censorship during Egypt’s revolution, Anonymous launched “Operation Egypt.” The group sent thousands of faxes into the country to keep citizens updated on government actions, as internet communication became increasingly difficult due to the government's crackdown. Anonymous also targeted Egyptian government websites, successfully taking several of them down.
During the Syrian revolution, the Syrian government decided to cut off its citizens' access to the internet as a method of suppressing the uprising. However, this move backfired, as it brought the full force of Anonymous’ wrath. The hacking group declared war on the Syrian government, systematically taking down all of its official websites. Additionally, Anonymous infiltrated the email accounts of several of President Assad’s closest aides and leaked their contents to the public.
3. Declared War on ISIS

After the Paris attacks claimed by ISIS, Anonymous declared war on the terrorist group and its supporters. Soon after, they shut down over 2,000 ISIS-related social media accounts. Since then, the group has taken down tens of thousands of pro-ISIS social media accounts.
The Brussels attack carried out by ISIS led to another declaration of war from Anonymous. The group then executed a quiet but effective strike on ISIS within the dark net, successfully taking down several ISIS websites. The terrorist group also suffered significant losses in digital currency during the cyber attack.
In the wake of the Nice attack, Anonymous released another video condemning the assault and vowing retaliation. Since declaring war on the terrorist organization, Anonymous has dealt severe blows to ISIS’s ability to function online.
2. Attack on North Korea

North Korea is a rogue state with the primary aim of amassing the world’s largest nuclear weapons stockpile. The secretive nation shows little interest in economic or nonmilitary development. Instead, the North Korean government channels the foreign exchange earned from exploiting its citizens abroad into missile testing and dubious satellite technology.
When Anonymous took a stand and directed its cyber-hacking skills at North Korea, the world responded with admiration. One of the key cyber attacks was triggered by North Korea’s satellite launch in February 2016. In the hours following the launch, Anonymous disabled three North Korean websites and continued to take down many more in the days that followed. The objective was to disrupt communications with the satellite and send a message to the North Korean leadership, hoping to discourage further satellite launches.
Anonymous has engaged in multiple confrontations with North Korea, one of the most notable being in 2013 when the group shut down several North Korean websites. This attack was in protest of the regime's authoritarian rule and its oppressive internet censorship.
1. Anonymous vs. Los Zetas

Los Zetas is a notorious Mexican criminal syndicate, infamous for its ruthless operations and violent crimes. On October 6, 2011, Anonymous released a video claiming that Los Zetas had kidnapped one of its members. In the video, Anonymous threatened to expose the gang’s Mexican collaborators unless the hostage was safely released. This act demonstrated the power Anonymous held, even over feared criminal organizations like Los Zetas.
After the threat was issued, Anonymous swiftly targeted the website of Gustavo Rosario Torres, a former Tabasco state prosecutor. The website was defaced with messages implying his connection to the criminal group. In the aftermath, Anonymous declared their intention to expose numerous Los Zetas collaborators in November 2011. The group’s threat reached the ears of Los Zetas, who released the hostage before the November deadline. As a result, the planned leak was called off, likely due to reports that Los Zetas had enlisted security professionals to track down Anonymous members.
