Fortunately, most of us rarely face extreme scenarios that force us into moral dilemmas. However, reflecting on such situations can be a fascinating and enlightening exercise. Below, I’ve compiled a list of ten challenging moral dilemmas, presented in no specific order. (Feel free to share your thoughts and decisions in the comments.)
10. Concentration Camp

Imagine you are a prisoner in a concentration camp. A cruel guard plans to execute your son, who attempted to escape, by hanging. He demands that you remove the chair from under your son. If you refuse, he threatens to kill not only your son but also another innocent prisoner. You have no doubt he will carry out his threat. What would you do in this situation?

9. The Accident

As an emergency responder, you’ve just been dispatched to an accident site. Upon arrival, you realize the vehicle involved belongs to your wife. Panicking, you hurry to the car and discover she’s trapped inside with another man.
She notices you and, despite being barely conscious, manages to whisper the words, “I’m sorry…”
Confused, you seek clarity, but her gaze provides the answer. The man beside her is her lover, with whom she has been unfaithful.
Staggering back in disbelief, you’re crushed by the truth her eyes reveal. As you regain composure, the severity of the crash becomes clear. Your wife is critically injured and requires immediate medical intervention, though her chances of survival are slim.
Glancing at the passenger seat, you notice her lover. He’s bleeding profusely from a neck injury, and you must act quickly to stop the bleeding. While it would only take five minutes to stabilize him, doing so would mean your wife would certainly perish.
If you prioritize your wife’s care, the man will inevitably bleed out, even though his death could have been prevented.
Who would you decide to save?
8. Spam Filtering

As the network administrator for a sizable company, your role includes overseeing email communications. This typically involves unblocking emails mistakenly flagged by spam filters. With a young family relying on your income, this job is crucial for you.
One day, a helpdesk request arrives from an employee asking for an email to be released. Normally routine, this request stands out because it comes from the wife of a close friend. Recognizing the name, you promptly address the issue. Following protocol, you open the email to verify its legitimacy and discover it’s far from spam—it’s a message from her lover. Reading further, it’s clear she’s been involved in an affair for quite some time.
You release the email but are left conflicted. Your first instinct is to inform your friend, but you recall the company’s strict policy: the contents of confidential emails must never be disclosed unless someone’s life is at risk. Breaking this rule could cost you your job.
You’re aware that disclosing this information carries significant risk. Even if you don’t reveal it directly, there’s a strong possibility the truth will surface eventually, and you’ll be implicated. Yet, staying silent feels like complicity in your friend’s wife’s infidelity, which weighs heavily on your conscience.
What action would you take?
7. The Neighbor

Your eight-year-old daughter, once cheerful and sociable, has been left deeply scarred after a horrific incident—she was raped. You’re almost certain the perpetrator is your neighbor. Though your daughter is too traumatized to speak, she has conveyed to you in other ways that he is the one responsible. However, there’s insufficient evidence to bring him to justice.
You attempt to rebuild your life, relocating to a new home and doing everything possible to support your daughter. However, it’s evident that the traumatic event has devastated her life and deeply affected your family.
One night, while dining out with your wife, you notice your former neighbor sitting alone at another table, looking despondent. You finish your meal quickly and leave. The next day, you learn that his wife has been murdered. Evidence soon surfaces to convict him of the crime, and initially, you feel a sense of relief, believing he’s finally facing justice.
But then you recall seeing him at the restaurant during the time of the murder, confirming his innocence. Perhaps he hired someone to commit the crime… You remember the police describing the scene as a staged burglary, leaving you uncertain about the truth.
You pause to reflect. If you remain silent, he’ll be convicted for a crime he didn’t commit, and the real killer will escape justice. If you provide him with an alibi, he’ll go free, but there’s no guarantee the actual murderer will be caught, especially if he orchestrated the crime. What would you do?
6. The Pregnant Woman

A pregnant woman, leading a group out of a coastal cave, becomes trapped at the cave’s entrance. With high tide approaching rapidly, the group faces imminent drowning unless she is freed. Only her head remains above the water. Someone in the group possesses a stick of dynamite. Using it would save the group but inevitably kill the woman, while not using it would result in everyone else drowning. What should they do?

5. Nieces and Daughters

You and your family are planning a weekend getaway. Your 7-year-old daughter is inseparable from her cousin, who is the same age. Since your families are close, your daughter asks if her cousin can join the trip. Having vacationed together before, you see no issue and agree.
Upon arriving at your destination, you find the rental house overlooks a beach. The girls eagerly ask if they can swim. You instruct them to wait until the car is unpacked but allow them to play on the sand near the shore. They dash off, and you start unpacking. Five minutes later, you hear screams from the beach—it’s the girls.
Rushing to the scene, you discover they ignored your instructions and went swimming. The beach is deserted, and the girls are trapped in a rip current.
Both are struggling, especially your niece, who isn’t as strong a swimmer as your daughter.
You swim out urgently, but upon reaching them, you realize saving both is impossible alone. A heart-wrenching decision must be made.
You must choose which girl to save first. While you have the strength to rescue both, you can only do so one at a time. Your niece is barely keeping her head above water, and if you prioritize your daughter, your niece likely won’t survive.
Your daughter is also struggling, but she’s a stronger swimmer. If you save your niece first, there’s a 50% chance your daughter can stay afloat until you return. However, you can’t be certain how long she’ll last.
4. Hit and Run

One morning, while driving to work, you’re running slightly late and driving a bit over the speed limit. As you reach to change the CD in your stereo, your car strikes something solid. You spin to a stop, but not before several other cars collide with yours and each other in an attempt to avoid the crash.
As you glance out of your car, you realize you’ve struck a person, and it’s clear they’re in critical condition—likely dead. Trembling, you step out and survey the chaos. Multiple cars are severely damaged, but the gravest consequence is the life lost due to your reckless driving.
While standing in shock, a visibly distressed woman approaches you, tears streaming down her face. Instinctively, you ask what’s wrong. She gives you a puzzled look and explains that she believes she just hit someone. When you ask where the person is, she points to the victim you struck.
Confused, you realize this woman mistakenly thinks she caused the accident and killed the person, though you know it was your fault. Whoever takes responsibility faces a lengthy prison sentence. If you let her assume the blame, you might escape consequences, but if caught covering it up, your punishment could be even more severe.
3. Lifeboat

You’re on a cruise when, two days in, the ship encounters technical issues. The captain announces an unscheduled stop. Hours later, another alert follows: the hull is breached, and everyone must evacuate to life rafts. As the rafts are lowered, you board one with others.
However, as the raft descends, it strikes the ship, tearing a hole in its side. Upon hitting the water, it begins to sink. With 10 people aboard, you quickly realize that by having 9 people bail water for 10 minutes while 1 rests, you can keep the raft afloat. This cycle must continue indefinitely to prevent sinking. Resting one person extends survival time, but if rescue doesn’t arrive within 5 hours, the raft will sink, and everyone will perish.
During your rest, you spot a friend from the cruise on another raft. He signals for you to join them, as there’s just enough space for one more. Their raft is drifting away quickly with the current, while yours struggles to keep up due to the hole.
If you jump to the other raft, the remaining 9 on your raft will have to bail water nonstop, reducing their survival time to 2 hours. However, you’ll likely survive long enough to be rescued.
If you stay, you forfeit the chance to escape, and there’s no guarantee rescue will arrive within 5 hours. Staying improves everyone’s odds of survival. As your friend’s raft drifts away, you have 30 seconds to decide.
a) Do you remain on your current raft, helping to keep it afloat as long as possible, hoping rescue arrives within 5 hours? b) Do you join your friend’s raft, ensuring your survival but drastically reducing the chances of the others being rescued?
2. The Mad Bomber

A deranged individual who threatened to detonate bombs in crowded areas has been captured. However, the bombs are already planted and set to explode soon, potentially killing hundreds. Conventional interrogation methods fail to make him reveal their locations. He remains silent, demanding a lawyer to protect his rights. Frustrated, a high-ranking official proposes torture, despite its illegality, arguing it’s necessary in this dire situation. Do you agree? Would it also be morally acceptable to torture his innocent wife if it’s the only way to extract information? Why?
1. Drug Bust

You’re on vacation in Bali with your wife and 18-year-old son. After a week, you’re at the airport preparing to board your flight home. An armed officer with a sniffer dog approaches. The dog checks your and your wife’s bags without issue, but when it reaches your son’s bag, it becomes noticeably more alert.
You glance at your son and notice he looks uneasy. You know he’s experimented with marijuana before, but you never imagined he’d be reckless enough to bring it on the plane. Initially, you’re furious and start mentally preparing a lecture, but then it hits you: Bali enforces a zero-tolerance drug policy. If your son is caught with illegal substances, he could face life imprisonment or even execution.
You look at your wife and see she’s reached the same realization, her face pale with fear.
The armed officer grows more serious as the dog continues sniffing. He locks eyes with you and demands that you open the bag.
You comply, and as the officer starts removing items from the bag, your heart sinks—there’s a small amount of marijuana hidden among your son’s belongings.
The officer glares at you and demands, “Whose bag is this?”
You know you must respond, but the answer is far from simple. Out of the corner of your eye, you notice your wife stepping forward, ready to claim the bag as hers. What do you say?
