Children have remarkable physical resilience. They can stretch and contort in ways that most adults can’t. They seem to survive countless bumps and bruises without lasting consequences, often managing to look adorable while engaging in their wild antics. However, even they have their limits. Sadly, there are numerous accounts of babies losing their lives in tragic, unforeseen circumstances. But some children have defied near-certain death in the most astonishing ways. Here are ten of the most incredible child survival stories.
10. Extreme Cold
On a bitterly cold night in Alberta, Canada, in 2001, 13-month-old Erika managed to slip out of the bed she was sharing with her mother, open an unlocked back door, and wander into the frigid, snowy night. At some point, she fell into the snow and lay there for an unknown amount of time. Erika’s mother didn’t realize her daughter was missing until 3:00 AM, plunging her into every parent’s worst nightmare. Miraculously, she quickly spotted her child, face down in the snow.
When paramedics arrived, they began working to revive Erika’s cold, blue body. They encountered difficulties when her limbs were so frozen that they couldn’t even get a needle to pierce her skin, and her mouth was packed with ice, making it almost impossible to insert a breathing tube. Thankfully, the rescuers persevered, overcoming these challenges by inserting an IV into her leg and successfully placing the tube.
Once Erika arrived at the hospital, she was wrapped in a 'Bair hugger' blanket, which provided external heat to revive her body. Miraculously, after two hours of cardiac arrest, her heart started beating again. Against all odds, Erika overcame one of the most perilous conditions and survived.
9. A Terrifying Fall
This story is equally as chilling. In a Bronx apartment in 2017, two-year-old Audrianna had become accustomed to sitting on the windowsill, playing on her tablet. The window was always securely locked, or so it seemed. That is, until her 17-year-old cousin Isabella came to visit.
While the two girls were playing in the room, Isabella opened the window to enhance the sound of the rain pattering outside. She briefly stepped out to grab a slice of pizza from the kitchen, only to be jolted by a loud 'bang' followed by Audrianna's scream. The toddler had somehow fallen from the window, landing on an awning five stories below. Miraculously, the awning acted as a perfect cushion, and Audrianna emerged from the fall completely unharmed.
Had the awning not been there, the toddler’s fall would have almost certainly been fatal. Thankfully, a neighbor rushed to the rescue and pulled her inside through a second-story window. Audrianna walked away from the incident with just a small bruise on her arm and a smile. Now that’s what you call an unexpected skydiving adventure!
8. A Terrifying Car Wreck
Another unbelievable modern miracle took place in Texarkana, Arkansas, in 2016, when a car was sideswiped by a semitruck trying to change lanes. What started as a car carrying five healthy passengers turned into a flipped wreck with four injured adults and an absent eight-month-old baby. When it became clear the baby had been ejected from the car, rescuers began searching for the child, fearing the worst.
Soon, a faint sound was heard from a patch of hay in the median. To everyone’s amazement, the baby was sitting in a storm drain, happily reaching up to the rescuers for help. Despite being ejected 7.3 meters (24 feet) from the car due to not being strapped into a car seat, the baby only had a minor injury. She left the scene virtually unscathed and would live to see another day.
7. The Cokeville Bombing Incident
Few stories are as gripping as the 1986 Cokeville, Wyoming, elementary school bombing. On May 16, David, Doris, and Princess Young entered the school with one chilling objective: to execute David’s sinister plan, 'the Biggie.' This plan involved taking all 100+ children at the school hostage for a ransom of $2 million each, detonating a bomb strapped to David, and transporting all the children and money to his imagined 'new world,' where he would be a god.
Upon arrival, Princess rebelled, running to rescue two other hostages held in a van and bringing them to the sheriff’s office to notify authorities about her father’s plot. Meanwhile, David and Doris corralled all the children and teachers into a small room for what was supposed to be a 'meeting,' but quickly turned into a tense hostage situation. The teachers tried to calm the students as everyone sat surrounded by weapons.
Soon after, David moved the bomb from his body to his wife’s, giving himself an opportunity to use the restroom. During his absence, Doris accidentally set off the bomb, causing flames to engulf her and burn many of the children. David returned, shot his wife, and then shot a teacher who was attempting to flee through a window. Following this, David went to the bathroom and took his own life. The extraordinary part of the story? Despite 76 people, including the wounded teacher, being injured by the explosion, not a single person other than David and Doris lost their life.
6. Alligator Attack Survival
In 2017, a seemingly ordinary day turned into a nightmare for a ten-year-old girl in Florida. Juliana was sitting by a lake in Orange County when a 2.7-meter (8.8 ft) alligator suddenly lunged and clamped down on her knee and calf. Initially, Juliana punched the predator in the face, but her efforts to break free were unsuccessful. Then, she recalled a life-saving trick she learned at Gatorland, an alligator theme park. She jammed her fingers into the alligator’s nose, waited for it to lose its breath, and then pried its jaws open.
Once the alligator released her, Juliana sprang to her feet, screaming, and fled from the scene. Her family rushed her to the hospital, where she received several stitches for the deep puncture wounds. Thankfully, she was otherwise unharmed. Authorities quickly responded, capturing the alligator and temporarily closing the lake to swimming to prevent further incidents. Thanks to Juliana’s calm and quick thinking, no one else was harmed that day.
5. A Desperate Suicide Attempt
It’s not uncommon for people to attempt suicide by leaping from towering bridges, but it’s extremely rare for someone to try to take their children with them in such a tragic act. When the Spicken family encountered this horrific situation, the outcome was nothing short of miraculous. In 2016, after a heated family argument, John Spicken took his two young sons and drove away. Police, tracking his phone's GPS, found his abandoned car near a well-known suicide bridge in New Jersey. At that point, authorities knew something had gone terribly wrong.
In this family suicide attempt, John jumped from the 30-meter (100 ft) bridge, his one-year-old and three-year-old sons in his arms. The three bodies fell into the trees below, narrowly missing the river beneath the bridge. Remarkably, the trees softened both boys' falls, and they emerged conscious and unharmed. While the father died instantly on impact, the boys survived the dreadful plunge, each with only mild concussions.
4. The Trash Chute Baby
In 1991, a 12-year-old girl in the Bronx gave birth to a child in her apartment. Immediately after, she made the shocking decision to discard her newborn. Rather than taking him to a safe drop-off site, she threw him down the apartment building’s trash chute. The baby fell four stories and landed in the garbage below. Around 9:45 AM, two and a half hours later, the maintenance workers were about to activate the compactor when they heard a sound coming from the dumpster. Instead of turning on the compactor, which would have crushed and killed the infant, they opted to call the police.
When a police sergeant arrived, he crawled through the small opening of the trash compactor and discovered the infant alive, hidden beneath a pile of newspapers. The baby was rushed to the hospital and treated for hypothermia. Amazingly, he was soon in stable condition. This miraculous infant had not only survived a horrific fall, but also narrowly avoided being crushed by the trash compactor.
3. Wheel Well Miracle
In 2014, a 16-year-old boy defied the odds in a way that no one would have expected on a regular flight to Hawaii. Instead of purchasing a ticket for the flight from San Jose to Kahului, the boy took an extraordinary risk—he scaled the fence surrounding the airport and climbed into the wheel well of the airplane. Although security cameras captured the moment, no one physically saw him enter the aircraft. Once inside the wheel well, he endured the entire five-hour journey to his destination.
Somehow, despite the freezing cold and lack of oxygen at high altitudes, he survived the perilous journey. He was unconscious during takeoff and didn’t regain consciousness until about an hour after the plane landed in Hawaii. His sudden appearance and miraculous survival stunned the ground crew, and he was promptly taken into custody by welfare services.
Typically, when a person is exposed to subzero temperatures with minimal oxygen, survival is nearly impossible, often resulting in death within minutes. It’s believed that the boy entered a state of suspended animation, slowing his body’s processes and protecting his vital functions. Despite temperatures plunging as low as –59 to –62 degrees Celsius (–75 to –80 °F), his incredible survival in such a confined space is a testament to the human spirit. What’s more, he didn’t fall out of the wheel well nor get crushed by the retracting landing gear—both of which were serious risks. Against all odds, the boy remained in the right position to be held safely in the wheel well. After this astounding survival, he avoided federal charges and became one of the few people ever to survive such a daring flight.
2. Lost at Sea
In 1961, the Duperrault family of five set off for what seemed like the perfect cruise through the Bahamas, but things took a horrifying turn. Midway through their voyage, the ship's captain set in motion a chilling plan to kill his wife. She fought desperately, screaming loud enough to alert the passengers. To cover up his crime, Captain Harvey murdered not only his wife but everyone else on board. The only survivor was 11-year-old Tere Duperrault Fassbender, the middle child of the Duperrault family.
As the brutal killings unfolded, Tere remained safe in her cabin below deck. When the screams reached her ears, she rushed out and stumbled upon the gruesome scene of her mother and brother's bodies. The ship was sinking, and instead of killing Tere right away, the captain threw her a line to the dinghy below. He lied, telling her he would return in a moment after retrieving something before they escaped together.
Tere wasn’t fooled by his deceit. Instead of accepting her fate, she let go of the line and slipped away unnoticed. Captain Harvey returned to land, claiming the ship had sunk, nearly getting away with his crimes. What he didn’t know was that Tere had survived and was battling for her life alone at sea. A lover of the outdoors, she managed to endure the searing heat of the day and the cold of the nights, clinging to her will to live. Without food or water, she survived on sheer determination. Four days later, Tere was rescued, providing the only firsthand account of the tragic events aboard the ship.
1. Tornado Terror
In 2008, a massive tornado tore through Castalian Springs, Tennessee, leaving behind a staggering scene of flattened buildings, raging fires, scattered debris, and lifeless bodies. As search teams scoured the devastation, their faces grew grim upon discovering three bodies that had been thrown hundreds of feet from their homes and caught in tree branches. At 1:30 AM, hours into the search, one rescuer found what appeared to be a doll lying face down in the mud. Upon closer inspection, it became clear that the 'doll' was, in fact, a living 11-month-old baby.
The baby, Kyson, had been swept up by the ferocious tornado and hurled hundreds of yards from his demolished home, alongside his 23-year-old mother, who did not survive the ordeal. When rescuers found him, his body was motionless, but after being gently wrapped in a coat and placed down, Kyson suddenly began crying, bringing immense relief to the rescue team. Despite the terrifying experience, he appeared to be unharmed and healthy. Soon, he was lovingly reunited with his grandparents, incredibly fortunate to have survived such a destructive storm.
