Cryptids are mysterious beings believed by some to exist, though they lack recognition from the scientific community. These creatures often feature in myths and folklore, and intriguingly, stories about them continue to surface even today. Among the most famous is Bigfoot. My fascination with these peculiar entities began after the discovery of the giant squid, sparking both curiosity and a sense of unease. This list is presented without any specific ranking.
10. Nessie / Champ
Champ and Nessie share similar origins and descriptions. Sightings of these creatures have been reported in Lake Champlain, USA, and Loch Ness, Scotland. Nessie is often described as a 20-foot-long creature with dark grey skin, humps, and at least one set of paddles, with a head resembling that of a horse. While witness accounts vary slightly, the most frequent sightings occurred in the 1930s and continue today. Champ, on the other hand, has been reported for over 400 years, with Native American legends even older. Descriptions of Champ include a serpentine body, a horse-like head, and a length of around 20 feet. Interestingly, laws have been enacted to protect Champ. Both creatures are theorized to be surviving dinosaurs, with descriptions closely resembling a plesiosaur.
9. Chupacabra
The Chupacabra is infamous for allegedly draining the blood of livestock, much like a vampire. This creature has puzzled cryptozoologists due to the wide range of descriptions provided. In the Americas, most reported Chupacabras have turned out to be canines suffering from severe mange, making them appear unrecognizable. Sightings date back to 1974, with some researchers drawing parallels to a creature in Taino Indian folklore. The most notable reports come from Puerto Rico between 1995 and 1999. Descriptions often include glowing red or orange eyes, large fangs, sharp claws, spiked backs, and a bipedal stance. Some witnesses even claim the creature changed colors. One theory suggests they could be the result of a failed scientific experiment.
8. Ebu Gogo
These small creatures were reportedly seen in Flores, Indonesia, from ancient times until the 19th century. Described as short, hairy, and pot-bellied, they walked upright like humans and were known to mimic human speech. Archaeologists in Australia and Indonesia unearthed skeletons of a previously unknown human species at a dig site, believed to have lived over 10,000 years ago. The skeletons, approximately one meter tall, are thought to possibly match the Ebu Gogo of local folklore. Indonesians have long used tales of the Ebu Gogo to frighten children into good behavior. The name translates to 'grandmother who eats anything.' Legends say the Ebu Gogo coexisted peacefully with humans for a time, but conflict arose when they began destroying crops and livestock. After stealing a baby, they fled to caves, which were later set ablaze by humans. Some reportedly escaped to the Liang Bua caves, where the small skeletons were discovered.
7. Springheel Jack
Springheel Jack has been sighted in locations like London, New Mexico, Massachusetts, and Argentina, with reports spanning from 1837 to the present day. Described as a tall, slender figure wearing a tight-fitting hat and a black cape, he is said to possess large claws and glowing red eyes. In 1837, a woman answered her door to a man claiming to be a police officer who had captured Springheel Jack. When she returned with a candle, the man vanished, only for her to find him by her gate. After handing him the candle, he attacked her, spewing blue and white flames and clawing at her face and dress. He fled when her sister intervened. In 1877, witnesses reported bullets passing through him harmlessly. Sightings in the 1930s placed him in Silver City, New Mexico, and Cape Cod, Massachusetts, with consistent descriptions. In 2005, he was seen leaping between rooftops, covering distances of up to five meters high and ten meters long. Some speculate a connection to Jack the Ripper.
6. Shadow People
Shadow people have been reported globally since the dawn of recorded history. These entities appear as living shadows, often glimpsed peripherally. Some witnesses describe them as semi-transparent dark patches that disappear the moment they are noticed. Encounters with shadow people often evoke intense feelings of fear and despair. There are accounts of these shadows attacking or chasing individuals. Unlike ordinary shadows, they are larger and do not match the observer's silhouette. I once experienced a similar encounter, feeling an overwhelming sense of dread as an unusually large shadow moved independently of me.
5. Beast of Bray Road
This creature has been sighted in Wisconsin, USA, since 1936. It moves on all fours or its hind legs and stands about six feet tall, with a muscular build and shaggy fur. Its wolf-like face features glowing yellow eyes and emits a foul odor resembling rotting flesh. One witness described it as the closest thing to a werewolf she had ever seen. In 1936, it was spotted digging at an Indian burial site, terrifying a watchman who prayed for his life. The beast reportedly uttered the word 'gadarah' before walking away on two legs. Gadara, a Greek city east of the Jordan River, is mentioned in the New Testament, where Jesus encountered a man possessed by evil spirits. The man, called Legion, was cured when Jesus transferred the spirits into a herd of pigs, which then drowned in the sea. Some believe the Beast of Bray Road was referencing this biblical event, suggesting its kind has existed since ancient times.
4. Mothman
This enigmatic creature has been reported in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, USA, with sightings dating back to 1966. Described as a gray, winged being with glowing red eyes positioned on its upper chest, the Mothman stands approximately six feet tall and is broader than a human. The first encounter involved five men working in a cemetery who witnessed a man-like figure flying overhead. In another incident, a group driving at speeds exceeding 100 mph claimed to be pursued by a similar entity, which kept pace before vanishing. Witnesses noted the creature flew without flapping its wings. Some reported their vehicles temporarily stalling upon sighting the Mothman. The creature has also been associated with UFO sightings and alleged visits by 'men in black' to a local newspaper office.
3. Pongo
Legends of this creature originate from Africa, describing it as a hybrid between a man and a monkey. It was believed to possess magical powers and a craving for human flesh. Female Pongos were said to transform into beautiful women to lure men close enough to devour them. Hybrid offspring from Pongos and humans appeared normal but harbored cannibalistic urges. In 1847, the Pongo was discovered to be real, though it is now known as the gorilla, a herbivorous animal. While no longer considered a cryptid, this example highlights how cryptid reports can be exaggerated, and some may turn out to be quite ordinary upon discovery.
2. Maryland Goatman
The Maryland Goatman has been sighted in Prince Georges County, Maryland, USA, since the 1970s. Described as having the lower body of a goat and the upper body of a man, complete with goat horns, it stands around 7 feet tall and weighs approximately 300 pounds. The first reported encounter involved a couple in a car who saw the Goatman holding an ax and staring at them before fleeing into the woods. Another witness claimed to see the creature in her backyard while her dog barked frantically. Too frightened to investigate, she discovered her dog decapitated the next morning.

Some accounts describe them ejecting streams of water or emitting a mildew-like odor, with a texture resembling a massive, soft tongue. Interestingly, they are said to resemble marine animals more than terrestrial ones.
