While streaming platforms have become the primary way to listen to music, many still passionately grow their vinyl collections. Interestingly, vinyl sales surpassed CDs in late 2019 for the first time in years.
Vinyl records remain unexpectedly popular, and a recent study by UK financial service Money.co.uk reveals that The Beatles dominate this format. The study analyzed data from Discogs, a music database and marketplace where users catalog and expand their music collections. By examining ownership statistics for 1.3 million vinyl records, the researchers ranked artists based on their total ownership numbers.
The Beatles led with over 3.3 million records, surpassing Pink Floyd by more than 500,000. Their iconic album Abbey Road topped the list, having also been named the best-selling vinyl record of the 2010s. Other notable artists in the top five include David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, and Queen, while The Rolling Stones narrowly beat Nirvana for sixth place. Elvis Presley secured the tenth spot with over 934,000 records owned by Discogs users.
Although the study doesn’t cover every vinyl record sale in history, it provides valuable insights into which artists thrive on vinyl.
