While most travelers don’t design their entire vacation around top-tier airports—unlike planning for the best beaches or Michelin-starred dining—Japan is the ideal destination if you ever decide to embark on such a unique adventure.
Japan dominates the list with four airports in the global top 20, including Tokyo International Airport (Haneda) at second place and Central Japan International Airport ranking 12th. Additionally, Narita and Kansai International Airports have secured spots within the top 10.
These rankings are curated by Skytrax, a UK-based firm specializing in enhancing airport and airline service quality. Since 1999, Skytrax has annually unveiled the World Airport Awards, recognizing excellence in customer satisfaction. The awards derive from the World Airport Survey, an online platform where participants nominate and evaluate airports across 30 criteria, such as signage and seating.
In June 2022, Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar, was crowned the winner once again, retaining its title from the previous year. Europe and Asia dominated the rankings, while North America didn’t secure a single spot in the top 20.
Skytrax highlights exceptional performers in specialized categories. Singapore Changi Airport, ranking third overall, took home awards for Best Airport Staff Service and Best Airport Dining. Istanbul Airport, though eighth overall, earned recognition as the top destination for shopping and the most family-friendly airport.
