Since the start of the year, significant progress has been made. Despite initial delays in the COVID-19 vaccine distribution, 5.86 billion doses have now been administered globally. However, this distribution has been uneven. For a detailed look at vaccination rates by country as of mid-September 2021, refer to the following list.
Gizmodo compiled this ranking of nations with the highest immunization rates, utilizing data from Johns Hopkins University. Smaller nations, with fewer residents to vaccinate, have had an edge in achieving herd immunity. Malta, with a population of just 500,000, leads globally with an 82.82 percent vaccination rate. The United Arab Emirates follows closely, having immunized 79.97 percent of its 9.7 million inhabitants. Other smaller nations like Singapore, Portugal, and Qatar complete the top five.
This pattern doesn't imply that larger nations can't achieve high vaccination rates. China, with a population of 1.4 billion, has successfully vaccinated 69.38 percent of its people. Similarly, the UK, Germany, Italy, and France, each with populations over 50 million, are among the global leaders in vaccination rates.
Economic status also plays a significant role in determining a country's position. Numerous affluent nations feature prominently on the list, while in low-income countries, merely 1.9 percent of the population has received at least one vaccine dose. Notably, the U.S., a wealthy nation, is absent from the top 25. In July, it ranked 18th, but its vaccination rate has plateaued at approximately 54 percent, placing it behind 39 other countries globally.
