Although some prices have dropped after significant increases, shopping at the grocery store remains a costly activity. According to the latest figures from the U.S. Census Bureau, the average American household spends $270.21 weekly on groceries, amounting to approximately $1,080 monthly and $14,051 annually. This data, gathered between October 18 and October 30, 2023, highlights a 25 percent rise in food prices from 2019 to 2023, as reported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The DoA notes that during this four-year span, food costs increased more rapidly than housing, healthcare, and several other essential expenses.
While nearly everyone is affected by rising grocery costs, some states experience even steeper weekly grocery bills on average. As you’ll discover, the cost of groceries is influenced by numerous factors, such as a state’s reliance on imports and household size. Below is a breakdown of the five states with the highest average weekly grocery expenses.
1. Hawaii
Hawaii's remote geographical position makes it unsurprising that it tops the list for the highest grocery expenses. On average, Hawaiian residents spend $333.88 weekly on groceries, which is about $64 more than the national average.
2. Alaska
Similar to Hawaii, Alaska's separation from the continental U.S. contributes to its high grocery costs. Essential items such as milk, bread, and chicken often need to be imported, leading to elevated prices. Alaskans typically spend around $328.71 per week on groceries.
3. California
California, known for its abundance of fresh produce, ranks third in grocery costs, with residents spending $297.72 weekly. Rising minimum wages and the state's elevated cost of living contribute to the high prices of items like eggs, beef, and more.
4. Nevada
In neighboring Nevada, the average weekly grocery expenditure is $294.76. Residents aged 25 to 39 face the highest costs, spending around $365 weekly, influenced by larger household sizes and dietary restrictions that drive up expenses.
5. Mississippi
Mississippi completes the top five states with the highest grocery bills, averaging $290.64 weekly. While this is over $20 above the national average, it’s lower than Nevada, California, Alaska, and Hawaii. Younger residents aged 18 to 24 spend the least, averaging about $169 per week on groceries.
