Dark corners or dim hallways often inspire the idea of installing a sconce light. However, the cost of hiring an electrician to wire a single fixture can be steep. Thanks to battery-operated LED lights, the hassle of wiring for spaces like closets or bookshelves is now obsolete. Illuminating any area has become simpler than ever.
Essential tools and materials for setting up an LED sconce light
To begin this project, gather your lighting fixture, a high-quality LED bulb, wire, wire snips, and pliers. Additionally, ensure you have the fixture's included hardware, a drill, and a screwdriver for installation.
For this project, a single-bulb lighting fixture with a shade is ideal for aesthetics. Since the interior won't resemble a standard bulb, concealing the light source ensures the best outcome. While many puck lights operate via a remote control or tap switch, motion sensor lights are less suitable for typical rooms. Opt for a puck light with a wall-mounted switch, mimicking a traditional fixture but without the wiring.
Steps to install an LED lighting fixture
Start by flipping your sconce to access the underside where the bulb would typically sit. Since no power connection is needed, the bulb socket is unnecessary. Instead, use a puck light or similar LED fixture. The fixture's underside has a base where the bulb socket is attached. Wrap a wire tightly around this base, twisting the ends to form a secure loop that won't slip off.
After creating the loop, open the LED light to expose the part meant for ceiling or wall attachment. Locate the screw holes and thread the wire ends through the bracket, twisting them to firmly attach the bracket inside the fixture.
With the bracket in place, insert batteries into the LED light and snap it onto the bracket inside the fixture. You can then control it via tap or remote, depending on your preference. If using the touch function, avoid fixtures with bulb covers, as they block access to the switch. For remote use, ensure the receiver faces outward before mounting the fixture.
After reassembling all components, mount your fixture using the included hardware. For drywall installations, ensure you use drywall anchors or secure it directly into a stud to prevent wall damage. To locate studs in modern structures, employ a strong magnet or a stud finder.
