Numerous theories exist on habit transformation—some suggest a 21-day timeline, while others emphasize starting with minor adjustments before tackling major ones. Reward systems, self-discipline, and sheer determination are often recommended as key strategies.
Despite trying various approaches, many still struggle to maintain a consistent gym schedule, quit smoking, avoid mindless TV snacking, improve sleep patterns, manage anger, stop nail-biting, or overcome other persistent habits.
Our goal was to identify effective behavior change strategies by evaluating methods promoted by productivity gurus, psychologists, and well-intentioned colleagues to determine what truly works.
To achieve this, we consulted Chris Bailey, the writer behind A Year of Productivity and Hyperfocus, who shared five essential steps for overcoming habits. James Clear, the author of Atomic Habits, provided insights into how our social circles might hinder our habit-changing endeavors. Additionally, Ben Gardner, a Senior Lecturer in Psychology at King’s College London, helped us debunk the popular notion of the “21-day habit formation rule.”
