Transnomino is a no-cost Mac application that automates tedious tasks, saving you significant time, especially if you frequently manage large collections of files. While it may require some initial learning, its robust features enable you to rename and organize chaotic photo or music folders effortlessly. Simply drag your files or folders into the app, and customize renaming or reorganization options. You can replace terms, add prefixes or suffixes, number files sequentially, or even relocate files into different directories.
The process of using Transnomino depends on your specific needs. For instance, I organized my music files by dragging an unnumbered album folder into the app. I selected the "Set" feature to completely replace existing file names, then used the three-dot menu next to the Set Text field to incorporate track numbers, artist names, and song titles into the file names. I manually adjusted spacing and dashes to achieve the desired format.

Rather than completely overwriting file names, I could have opted for the "Prefix" feature to insert track numbers at the beginning of each filename. If I had multiple albums in a single folder, the Path option would allow me to sort songs into their respective album folders. The key takeaway is that investing a small amount of time configuring your renaming preferences can save you from the tedious task of manually renaming files.
Depending on the file type, you can access various metadata. For photos, EXIF data is available, and there’s even functionality to convert GPS coordinates into street addresses. This means you could, for example, categorize photos based on their location.
While the exact approach depends on your requirements, the general principle is that you can leverage file metadata to rename them. Additionally, features like wildcards and regular expressions enable even more sophisticated renaming strategies. In essence, Transnomino is a must-know tool for anyone managing large file collections. It streamlines organization, making file handling significantly more efficient.
