If you're like many people, you probably remember growing up with a family savings jar. Everyone contributes spare change or dollars, and over time, the money adds up. The problem is, many of us rarely use cash anymore. Tip Yourself is a free app that acts as a digital version of that savings jar.
The idea is straightforward. When you want to save some extra cash, simply transfer a dollar or two (or any amount you prefer) into your virtual “tip jar,” which is your Tip Yourself account. You can even add a reason for saving, making it a fun way to motivate yourself. For example, if you wanted to implement the classic swear jar rule, every time you swear, you would send a dollar to your Tip Yourself account.
Naturally, you'll need to link your bank account for the app to function. However, they use the same 256-bit SSL encryption that your bank uses. You can view their full privacy policy here. Of course, you can transfer your “tips” back into your savings account whenever you want. It’s similar to how Digit works, except instead of the app automating your savings, you manually choose when to save.
The app also provides a timeline of your savings progress, displayed through a calendar. Days you've saved are marked in green. While the concept is simple, having a separate, virtual savings jar is an appealing idea—sure, you could do something similar with your bank accounts, but this makes it more engaging. The app is currently only available on iPhone, though they're developing an Android version as well.
