They are an unexpected source of antioxidants, fiber, and protein, and are known to support immunity and brain health. Additionally, functional mushrooms such as tremella, along with lion’s mane and chaga, offer even more advantages. We spoke with an expert to explore these benefits in detail.
What Are Tremella Mushrooms?
Tremella mushrooms, scientifically known as Tremella fuciformis, are a unique fungus with various nicknames such as snow mushrooms, snow fungus, white fungus, and white jelly mushrooms. As their names suggest, these mushrooms are white and resemble fluffy snowballs, translucent seaweed, wild sponges, or underwater coral, unlike the typical brown and white mushrooms found in grocery stores. Native to tropical regions like Brazil and parts of Asia, they have been used for centuries.
“Tremella mushrooms are both edible and medicinal, with a history of use in Chinese medicine spanning thousands of years,” explains Volpe. “They are valued for their applications in anti-aging skincare, immune support, disease prevention, and more.”
Recognized as adaptogens with nootropic properties—compounds believed to improve cognitive functions like memory and learning—tremella mushrooms are now widely accessible in the mainstream market. Thanks to online shopping, they are easy to find. While fresh tremella may be less common, dried or powdered forms and mushroom-based products offer similar benefits.
Adaptogens
Adaptogens are natural compounds, typically sourced from herbs or roots, that help the body resist stress. They work to maintain equilibrium and promote a balanced state of homeostasis.
Benefits of Tremella Mushrooms
1. Assist in Combating Stress
While 'adaptogen' may sound like a trendy term, it holds real significance. “Adaptogenic herbs and foods, such as tremella, interact uniquely with each individual’s system to help reestablish balance,” says Volpe.
Studies have shown that mushrooms, including tremella, serve as effective adaptogens. According to a 2022 paper in Frontiers in Pharmacology, they help the body adapt to internal and external stressors, restoring balance and regulating various biological processes.
2. Enhance Brain Health
You might have come across the term 'nootropics.' These are compounds found in certain foods and supplements that can potentially improve cognitive function, making tremella mushrooms an appealing option for those seeking a mental edge.
“Nootropics are recognized for their ability to support and improve memory, focus, and other cognitive functions,” explains Volpe, noting that their mechanisms are not yet fully understood.
For tremella mushrooms, their cognitive benefits may stem from their polysaccharides—carbohydrate molecules with vital roles in the body. “Studies indicate that the unique polysaccharides in tremella mushrooms may protect brain cells from neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and even aid in repairing memory impairments,” says Volpe.
3. Promote Healthy Skin
Tremella mushrooms are known for their anti-aging, photoprotective, wound-healing, and skin barrier-enhancing properties. “They have a unique connection to the skin,” Volpe explains. “The powerful antioxidants in tremella reduce inflammation and combat aging in skin cells, while their polysaccharides hydrate the skin similarly to the highly sought-after hyaluronic acid.”
“A 2021 study revealed that tremella polysaccharides can modify gene expression in skin cells, leading to increased production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid in skin fibroblasts exposed to UVA rays,” says Volpe. Additional research supports tremella’s ability to combat oxidative stress, with studies highlighting its strong antioxidant and free radical-neutralizing properties. Fermented tremella may offer even higher levels of antioxidants, according to one study.
Many of tremella’s skin benefits stem from its effects on collagen, a crucial protein for skin structure, firmness, and elasticity, which diminishes with age. Consuming tremella mushrooms can help reduce collagen loss and repair damaged collagen, while tremella polysaccharides in skincare products can boost collagen production. Volpe notes that you can enjoy these skin benefits by either consuming tremella or applying it topically.
4. Strengthen Immunity
“Tremella mushrooms are highly effective in modulating and optimizing the immune system,” says Volpe. She references a 2020 review that highlights tremella’s ability to positively influence the immune system in both animal and human studies. As an adaptogen, this is expected, given their role in balancing immune function to restore bodily equilibrium.
Volpe also notes that tremella’s immune-boosting properties may extend to gut health. Researchers are exploring the intricate connection between gut microbiota and the immune system, with tremella mushrooms potentially enhancing microbial diversity in the colon. “This could encourage the growth of immune-regulating probiotics such as Lactobacillus,” she explains, referencing a 2021 study in Frontiers in Immunology.
5. Support Gut Health
Similar to common mushrooms found in grocery stores, tremella mushrooms are packed with essential nutrients, particularly fiber. Given that many Americans lack sufficient fiber in their diets, high-fiber foods like tremella are especially valuable.
“Tremella mushrooms contain approximately 30 percent dietary fiber, making them an excellent choice for improving digestion,” Volpe explains. Not only are they easy to digest, but they also support overall digestive health.
The polysaccharides in these mushrooms have been shown to positively influence colonic inflammation. They also aid in restoring gut microbiota and microbial metabolites, fostering a healthier gut. Additionally, fiber is beneficial not only for digestion but also for heart health.
6. Reduce Cholesterol
Mushrooms, especially tremella mushrooms, have demonstrated the ability to lower cholesterol, thereby supporting heart health. The polysaccharides in these mushrooms improve lipid metabolism and reduce cholesterol absorption in the intestines. Their antioxidant properties also combat oxidative stress, further enhancing cardiovascular well-being.
7. Enhance Wound Healing
It might be surprising, but tremella mushrooms can act as a natural moisturizer and aid in wound healing. Research indicates that tremella polysaccharides have moisturizing and anti-inflammatory properties. Their gelatinous texture can help heal skin wounds, making them effective for treating cuts, scrapes, and other abrasions.
8. Minimize UVA Damage
UVA radiation from the sun can lead to oxidative stress on the skin. However, the polysaccharides in tremella mushrooms, known as TFPS, can mitigate this damage. These polysaccharides have strong antioxidant properties that counteract the free radicals produced by UVA exposure. This makes tremella mushrooms a valuable ingredient in cosmetics. Still, wearing sunscreen remains essential to protect against skin damage.
9. Support Muscle Growth
Protein plays a crucial role in muscle repair, immune function, and the production of enzymes and hormones. “Tremella mushrooms are higher in protein compared to many other mushrooms, making them a great option for vegans and vegetarians,” Volpe explains.
“One cup of tremella mushrooms provides approximately 12 grams of protein.” (The recommended daily protein intake is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight. For example, a 140-pound person should aim for at least 50 grams of protein daily.)
Tremella Mushroom Safety, Uses, and Tips
Tremella mushrooms are generally safe to consume, with no current studies indicating significant side effects or toxicity. While they are beneficial, their adaptogenic effects are most effective when used for short periods.
As someone who personally uses tremella mushrooms, Volpe offers several recommendations:
- Soak the white fungus for at least an hour or overnight. Simmer it with other herbs—such as red dates (jujubes), dried lotus seeds, and lily bulb petals—in hot water for about 30 minutes to create a nourishing drink.
- Incorporate tremella mushrooms into soups or smoothies.
Tremella mushrooms can also be consumed in capsule or powder form. However, always consult your healthcare provider before starting any new supplement. Be cautious, as dietary supplements are not FDA-regulated. Research thoroughly before purchasing to ensure safety and quality, and look for third-party testing certifications from organizations like NSF and U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP).
