While money challenges may not be for everyone, they can often provide valuable lessons about our spending habits. A month-long 'money diet' could reveal how much you can save when you cut back.
Eliza Cross, founder of HappySimpleLiving, has been leading a 'January Monthly Diet' challenge for six years. Throughout the month, she refrains from non-essential spending. In an interview with Forbes, she shares how the challenge has benefited her finances:
It's exciting to see how much money can accumulate when I'm not spending it on dining out, impulse buys, or unnecessary items. This financial detox motivates me to be more mindful of my spending throughout the rest of the year.
Though money challenges have their critics, I find many of them quite helpful. They provide a sense of control, which often leads to better financial habits. With this challenge, I appreciate seeing just how much cutting back can contribute to savings.
This challenge also provides an opportunity to reflect on your spending habits. You may realize there are expenses you incur for things you could get for free. You might discover certain services you pay for can be done on your own with little time or effort. Most importantly, you'll gain a clearer understanding of what truly qualifies as 'essential' spending.
