With millions of global users, over 250 million of them log into Facebook each month using mobile devices. It has millions of users worldwide, with over 250 million of them accessing the platform through mobile devices each month.
Early mobile Facebook users could only update their status via text messages. As smartphones advanced, users gained access to Facebook’s mobile site, m.facebook.com, through their browsers. With the arrival of the iPhone, Android, and other sophisticated phone operating systems, users could download dedicated apps for their devices from app markets.
Naturally, Facebook joined the wave of mobile apps, creating one that has become almost as feature-rich as the desktop version of the platform. The company continues to introduce more apps and features, such as the chat app released in August 2011. In a nostalgic twist, Facebook has even launched an app for 'dumb phones,' or 'feature phones,' which lack the advanced capabilities of devices like iPhones or Androids.
Regardless of the device you're using, Facebook likely has an app that supports it. Let’s dive into how to download the Facebook app.
How to Get Facebook Mobile
The most straightforward way to interact with Facebook on your smartphone is by using the Facebook app. Image courtesy of sot/Photodisc/Getty ImagesAccessing Facebook on a computer is simple – just go to facebook.com. For mobile devices, head over to the mobile site at m.facebook.com. But the easiest way to browse Facebook on your smartphone is by using the Facebook app.
To get started, download the app by visiting your phone's app store and install the Facebook app with just a few taps. It's that simple! Some devices even come with the Facebook app pre-installed, thanks to the 250 million mobile users that can't be overlooked.
After installing the app, you’ll need a Facebook account. You can sign up via the app when you first launch it or through your computer. You’ll select a username, create a password, and provide an email for notifications. Once set up, you can personalize your profile with your interests, location, relationship status, a picture of you and your cat – whatever you like! If you already have an account, the app will prompt you to log in the first time you tap the blue-and-white 'F' in your app list.
Facebook offers apps for nearly every smartphone, including iPhone, Android, Palm, Blackberry, and Windows devices. There are also apps available for tablets that use similar operating systems. As of July 2011, you can even find an app for Java-enabled phones that aren't considered 'smart.' Check the Facebook blog to see if your phone is one of the 2,500 devices that can use this app.
Once you're logged in, take a look at all the things you can do – and the answer is: pretty much everything!
Features of the Facebook Mobile App
The home page of the Facebook app neatly displays links to all the features of the site on a single, user-friendly screen. Image by Rebecca van Ommen/Paper Boat Creative/Getty ImagesOn the Facebook app's home page, you can quickly access various features like your News Feed, Profile, Friends, Messages, Places, and more. Notifications appear at the bottom of the screen, so you can instantly see if you've been tagged in a post or photo or if someone has written on your wall.
Most users begin by browsing the News Feed, which showcases the social content of your network. By clicking the 'Top News' button in the top-right corner of the News Feed, you can choose from options like Top News, Most Recent, Status Updates, Photos, and more. Scroll down to the bottom to filter by a specific group you're part of if you'd like to see updates only from that group.
To update your status, tap on the text box at the top that says 'What's on your mind?' and type your message. You can upload photos from your phone by selecting the phone icon next to the status box. To view comments on a post, tap 'Comments'; to comment on or like a post, click the small plus sign on the right. Press the back button on your phone to return to the News Feed.
To see a slideshow of your friend's photos, tap any photo in their post. It will open as a slideshow against a dark background, just like on the website. Press your phone’s back button to return to the News Feed.
The Places feature in the Facebook app is fun, allowing you to check in wherever you are. When you tap 'Check In' on the Places screen, the app uses your phone's GPS to suggest nearby locations. You can also create a starred list of friends you check in with frequently, or add Facebook friends who are with you in real life, such as at a café or library.
A common issue for some Facebook app users is the inability to tag friends from their phones. On the website, typing '@' followed by a friend's name tags them, making their name clickable and sending them a notification. However, in the app, doing this does not officially tag the person, and they won’t receive a notification.
While it's tempting to share your location and activities, privacy remains a critical issue in social networking. Continue reading to learn about Facebook's mobile privacy features.
Facebook Mobile Protection
Despite a few past privacy issues, Facebook has learned to prioritize online privacy more effectively.
Tim Robberts/The Image Bank/Getty ImagesThough Facebook had privacy concerns earlier on, it has taken significant steps to enhance its online privacy measures. To help users manage privacy on mobile, Facebook has launched a dedicated privacy guide at m.facebook.com/privacy. After logging in, the process to adjust your privacy settings is nearly identical to that on the website.
You can access your privacy settings by going to Settings and then clicking "Change" next to Privacy Settings. Like on the full website, you can adjust who can view your posts — whether it's friends, friends of friends, or everyone by default. You can also customize who you share posts with and instantly apply those settings.
The app provides a detailed overview of the information you've shared with other apps and websites, giving you control over what these companies can access. Additionally, Facebook lets you use any app that supports Single Sign-On technology. After signing into the Facebook app, you won’t need to log in again for other Single Sign-On apps, such as Groupon or Yelp. This feature is designed to save you from the hassle of entering complex passwords on tiny keyboards or screens.
