Want to stay updated on the hottest spots around town? Yelp is a social networking site where users can post reviews and rate businesses. Siri Stafford/Getty ImagesWhen you visit a restaurant and have a great experience, you're likely to share it with others. Whether it's a delicious meal, excellent service, or inviting atmosphere, people often spread the word. Urban dwellers, especially, are always looking for the best and most popular places, and recommending them is a great way to guide others to the best spots. This extends beyond eateries to other businesses and services, such as when someone suggests a trustworthy mechanic or a highly recommended doctor.
On the flip side, if you have a poor experience at a restaurant — whether the food falls short or the service is lacking — you might feel compelled to warn others. Rather than let your friends waste their money on an unsatisfactory meal, you might suggest they reconsider their choice and recommend a better alternative.
Businesses thrive or fail based on communication, and with the Internet, spreading the word about service quality is quicker than ever. Yelp.com, a widely used social networking platform focused on reviewing and sharing insights about businesses, plays a key role. Established in 2004 in San Francisco, California, Yelp functions like a large online bulletin board where users post their experiences with local businesses. Adopting a Web 2.0 model, Yelp allows members to control content, reviews, and discussions. While the company is based in San Francisco, its online communities are present across major U.S. cities and internationally, expanding to Canada, Ireland, and the UK.
So, how exactly does Yelp operate? How do its users engage with the platform, and what advantages does it provide?
Using Yelp
The heart of Yelp.com is reviewing various businesses, including restaurants, bars, and retail establishments. Maria Teijeiro/Getty ImagesAnyone with internet access can explore the Yelp website. It's easy to browse reviews, ratings, and read about others' experiences. Upon visiting Yelp's homepage, the site usually detects your nearest major city or town, displaying popular locations and highlighted reviews. For example, if you're in New York City, visiting Yelp will likely bring you to yelp.com/nyc.
However, to write reviews or follow other Yelp users, you need to sign up and create a personal account. Signing up for a Yelp account is similar to other social networks — you'll need to provide your first and last name, email address, password, and, if you're in the U.S., your ZIP code. In Canada, your postal code is required, while in Ireland, it's your city or town, and in the UK, it's your postcode. Your gender and age are optional. Once you're signed in, you’re officially a 'Yelper,' a term for Yelp users.
Now you’re ready to review almost any business in your area. To leave a review, simply click the 'Write a Review' button at the top of the page. Then search for the business you'd like to review by entering its name, city, and ZIP code. Once the business appears in the search results, click on the 'Write a Review' button next to it. You'll be able to rate the business with one to five stars, from one being 'Eek! Not good!' (poor) to five being 'Woohoo! Excellent!' (great). Below, you can type your review, with additional options to add details like the price range or whether the business accepts credit cards or has outdoor seating.
Benefits of Yelp
Yelp serves as an excellent example of a Web 2.0 site, where the majority of the content is created by its users. Businesses will be taken aback by the detailed nature of your reviews. Stockbyte/Getty ImagesThe key advantage of Yelp is the seamless communication experience it offers its users. It's like a digital version of word-of-mouth, and with Yelp communities expanding across American cities and globally, it's become easier to discover popular spots and hear others' opinions.
Yelp is more than just reviews; it also offers events, event reminders, special deals from businesses, and the ability to connect with other users, much like Facebook or MySpace. You can send messages to fellow Yelpers or 'follow' specific users, ensuring you see their posts first when browsing businesses. If you want to share your Yelp reviews on Facebook, you can easily import them from your profile. By logging in and adjusting the settings, you can automatically upload your recent reviews to reach an even broader audience.
Despite the reputation of the internet and social networks as spaces for trolling and online arguments, Yelp stands out as a platform where users genuinely aim to share balanced feedback based on personal experiences. In fact, 85% of Yelp's reviews are rated three stars or higher, suggesting that most users come to the site to share positive experiences rather than to vent about poor ones.
Although 'Sponsored Results' appear when searching for businesses that have paid for ads on the site, Yelp strives to ensure fair treatment for all businesses. The team monitors suspicious posts and does not remove negative reviews from sponsored businesses. Additionally, Yelp works to prevent employees from posting overly favorable reviews for their own company or leaving unjustly negative ones for competitors.
