Quick poll — who among you can identify Wally West?
If your hand isn’t up, chances are you had a social life in high school. If your hand is waving wildly, you likely spent your teenage years arguing over whether Wolverine’s claws could slice through Captain America’s shield.
Indeed, any comic book enthusiast will confirm that Wally West is the real name of the speedster hero, The Flash, a secret carefully guarded from both the public and his superpowered foes. But why go through the trouble of maintaining a hidden identity? In today’s comic book landscape, secret identities are becoming as rare as DC's Infinity Earths. Truly concealed alter egos are increasingly scarce. Among Marvel and DC, only five major heroes—Superman, Spider-Man, Batman, Daredevil, and The Flash—have managed to keep their civilian lives under wraps. Whether it’s a deliberate decision or simply a case of loose lips, keeping secrets in the comic book world, much like in real life, is no easy feat.
Let’s step into an imaginary phone booth and analyze which of these five iconic heroes is most likely to lose their secret identities. Join us as we explore which superhero’s hidden persona is at the highest risk of being exposed by those in the know.
The Fast And The Curious

Comic Book Icon: The Flash
Secret Identity: Wally West, former Kid Flash and nephew of the Silver Age Flash, Barry Allen
Allies aware of true identity: Linda Park (Wife), The Justice League of America (Every current JLA member has disclosed their identities to one another, including Aquaman, Batman, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, Plastic Man, Superman, and Wonder Woman.)
Enemies aware of true identity: None
Total: 8
Chances of being exposed in the near future: Slim. The Flash's identity was once widely known, but after losing his unborn child to his nemesis, Professor Zoom, Wally West accepted a deal with the supernatural entity, the Spectre, to erase his identity from the world's memory. Only his closest allies, such as his wife and JLA members, have since recalled his dual life. With no villains capable of uncovering the truth, The Flash remains safe... for now.
Supe's On

Comic Book Icon: Superman
Civilian Identity: Clark Kent, reporter for the Daily Planet
Allies aware of civilian identity: The JLA (Aquaman, Batman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, Plastic Man, and Wonder Woman), Black Racer, Dr. Occult, the Eradicator, Green Arrow, Jon and Martha Kent (his "parents"), Lana Lang (ex-girlfriend), Lois Lane (wife), Lori Lemaris (former girlfriend), Nightwing, Phantom Stranger, the Spectre, Steel, Superboy, Supergirl, Waverider
Enemies aware of civilian identity: Bizarro, Brainiac, the Cyborg, Dominus, Mr. Mxyzptlk
Total beings aware of civilian identity: 28
Chances of being Exposed in the near future: Unlikely. While most who know his secret are allies, the handful of villains in the know are either incapacitated (Dominus and the Cyborg are trapped in the phantom zone, Brainiac is stranded at the dawn of time) or indifferent (Bizarro and Mxyzptlk are more interested in challenging Superman than revealing his identity). Though he might want to be more cautious about sharing his secret, Superman can continue using phone booths for the foreseeable future.
Dangling by a Thread

Comic book icon: Spider-Man
Secret identity: Peter Parker, photographer for the Daily Bugle
Allies aware of his secret identity: Angel, Aunt May (aunt), the Black Cat, Bounty, Daredevil, Dr. Strange, Ka-Zar, Kaine (Peter Parker clone), Kraven, Madame Webb, Mary Jane Watson-Parker (wife), Nick Fury, the Sentry, Spindrifter, Thor, Wolverine
Enemies aware of secret identity: Chakra, Dr. Octopus, Green Goblin, Judas Traveller, Mendel Stromm, Mephisto, Nightmare, Puma, Stunner, Thanos, Venom
Total: 28
Chances of being exposed in the near future: Uncertain. While many of Spider-Man's enemies who know his identity are either incapacitated (Mendel Stromm, Stunner), suffering from memory loss (Doc Ock, Venom), inactive (Puma), or too powerful to care (Nightmare, Mephisto, Thanos), Spider-Man isn't entirely safe. His greatest threat, the Green Goblin, is held back only by his insanity and a twisted sense of honor. Norman Osborn has repeatedly disrupted Peter Parker's life, from buying the Daily Bugle to orchestrating elaborate schemes like making him believe he was a clone, kidnapping his child, and even replacing Aunt May with an imposter. After his public identity was revealed and he was imprisoned, exposing Spider-Man as Peter Parker could be Norman Osborn's final act of revenge.
The Bat's Out of the Bag

Comic book icon: Batman
Secret identity: Bruce Wayne, billionaire playboy and prominent figure in Gotham City's social scene
Allies aware of true identity: The JLA (Aquaman, The Flash, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, Plastic Man, Superman, and Wonder Woman), Azrael, Batgirl, Sasha Bordeaux (Bruce Wayne's bodyguard), Catwoman, Henri Ducard (Bruce Wayne's arms dealer), Green Arrow, Carleton LeHah, Man-Bat, Nightwing, Nomoz, Oracle, The Outsiders (Black Lightning, Geo Force, Halo, Katana, Metamorpho), Alfred Pennyworth (Bruce Wayne's butler), Robin, Sentinel (original Green Lantern, Alan Scott), Leslie Thompkins (friend and mentor to Bruce Wayne), Waverider, Wildcat.
Enemies aware of true identity: Bane, Bird (Bane's minion), David Cain (Batgirl's father), Deathstroke, Hush, Lady Shiva, Nyssa, Ra's Al Ghul, the Riddler, Talia, Trogg (Bane's minion), Ubu (Ra's Al Ghul's servant), Zombie (Bane's minion)
Total: 43
Chances of being exposed in the near future: Very high. Bane demonstrated the risks of a leaked secret when he invaded Wayne Manor and broke Bruce's back. With numerous villains aware of his identity, the danger to Bruce's loved ones is constant. Additionally, the many civilians who know Batman's true identity are vulnerable targets for those seeking to uncover the man behind the mask. Even more troubling, it's suggested—though unconfirmed—that the Joker knows Batman's identity but is too deranged to act on it. Strengthening Wayne Manor's security and securing the Batcave is more crucial than ever.
The Devil's Overdue

Comic book hero: Daredevil
Secret identity: Matt Murdock, attorney
Allies aware of his secret identity: The Black Cat, The Black Panther, The Black Widow, Luke Cage, Captain America, Dr. Strange, Milla Donovan (girlfriend), Echo, Elektra, Falcon, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, Lora (friend of Milla Donovan), Moondragon, Nick Fury, Foggy Nelson, Ivan Petrovitch (Black Widow's mentor), Cecelia Reyes, Reed Richards, Sister Maggie (Daredevil's mother), Spider-Man, Stick, Nathanial Taggart, Tork, Ben Urich
Enemies aware of his secret identity: Bullseye, Crossbones, Vanessa Fisk (Kingpin's Wife), John Garrett, Kingpin, Mephisto, Micah Synn, Mr. Fear, Silke, Typhoid Mary, Voodoo Priest Mambo
Total: 36
Chances of being exposed in the near future: Unavoidable. A tabloid previously revealed Matt as Daredevil, forcing him to fake his death. Recently, the villain Silke disclosed Matt Murdock's identity to strike a deal with the FBI. While S.H.I.E.L.D. tries to suppress this information, a rogue agent leaked it to the Daily Bugle. In response, Matt held a press conference denying he is Daredevil. With numerous villains aware of his identity and multiple public exposures, keeping Murdock and Nelson's law firm operational may require a miracle.
