The Nintendo Switch’s versatility shines through its multiple play styles, thanks to its hybrid console and handheld design. Whether docked to your TV or used in handheld or tabletop mode, the Switch provides flexibility. It also supports a variety of first and third-party controllers right out of the box, ensuring a comfortable gaming experience. But what if you prefer using a PlayStation 4 or 5 controller, or even an Xbox gamepad? Surprisingly, it’s entirely possible.
At first glance, this seems unlikely since Sony and Microsoft use different input drivers compared to the Switch. However, with a small investment, you can seamlessly sync a PlayStation or Xbox controller to your Nintendo Switch with minimal hassle.
To pair a PlayStation or Xbox controller with your Nintendo Switch, you’ll need a third-party device called the Mayflash Magic NS. This compact USB wireless adapter plugs directly into your Switch dock or connects to the USB-C port using the included dongle for handheld play. Two versions are available: the Magic NS 1 ($20 on Amazon) and the Magic NS 2 ($22 on Amazon). Both support multiple controller APIs, including DInput and XInput. While PlayStation 3, 4, and 5 controllers work with both models, Xbox controllers are only compatible with the Magic NS 2.
Of course, there are a few compromises. Features unique to specific controllers, like the PS5 DualSense’s haptic triggers, won’t function on the Switch since its games aren’t designed for such technologies. However, motion and gyro controls should still work on controllers that support them.
Playing Switch games with a non-Switch controller can feel confusing, especially if you’re accustomed to the button layouts of PS5 or Xbox. Although you can customize the Switch’s button mapping via System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Change Button Mapping, the in-game button prompts won’t align with your controller’s layout, which can be a bit disorienting. Despite this, the setup process itself is straightforward.
While the Magic NS isn’t required for all third-party controllers, and some may not even work with it, it’s an excellent tool for those who want to use their favorite controller with the Switch.
