Hives, characterized by itchy, rash-like bumps, commonly affect children but can occur in anyone. Often triggered by food allergies, diagnosing the cause can be challenging as reactions may appear hours or even a day after consuming the allergen. While identifying and avoiding the allergen and boosting immunity are crucial, the immediate focus is on alleviating the itching.
Chamomile essential oil is a top choice for treating hives. However, if it's unavailable or too costly, lavender oil, known for its anti-inflammatory properties, is a great alternative. Both chamomile and lavender oils not only reduce irritation but also provide a soothing effect, calming the intense discomfort caused by itching.
Begin by cleansing the affected area with a warm aromatherapy wash (recipes provided below). If the itching persists, apply the Hives Paste. This remedy is particularly effective for children, who may usually resist poultices but will appreciate the immediate relief it offers.

Soothing Hives Skin Wash
- 5 drops of chamomile oil or 10 drops of lavender oil
- 2 drops of peppermint oil
- 3 tablespoons of baking soda
- 2 cups of water (or substitute with peppermint tea)
Mix all the ingredients thoroughly. If using peppermint tea as a base, steep 4 teaspoons of dried peppermint leaves in 2.5 cups of boiling water for 15 minutes, then strain. Add the remaining ingredients to the tea. Gently apply the mixture to the affected area using a soft cloth or sponge until the itching subsides. While chamomile is ideal for this remedy, lavender oil can be used as a cost-effective alternative if needed.
Calming Hives Paste
- 1/4 cup of the Hives Skin Wash (from the recipe above)
- 3 tablespoons of bentonite clay (found at natural food stores)
Combine the ingredients to form a paste and let it sit for five minutes to thicken. Apply the paste to the irritated skin using your fingers or a wooden applicator. Allow it to dry and remain on the skin for at least 45 minutes before rinsing off. If itching persists, reapply for an additional 30 minutes.
