Wax begonias, or fibrous begonias, are annual plants known for their vibrant colors. These begonias thrive in full sun, except in regions where temperatures exceed 90°F for extended periods, or in bright shade where trees are pruned high. From planting until frost arrives, they bloom in white, pink, rose, or red. Resistant to pests and diseases, their only limitation is a somewhat restricted color palette. They are widely available in market packs.
Description: Wax begonias are known for their uniformity, with dense clusters of leaves surrounded by flowers. You can find all four flower colors with a choice of leaf hues, ranging from deep red to various shades of green. Varieties with darker or bronze leaves provide a striking contrast to the flowers, while some hybrids feature double flowers resembling rosebuds, and others have variegated foliage.
How to grow: Fibrous begonias thrive in rich, well-drained soil that is allowed to dry out between waterings. In full sun, they form compact, dense plants, but in deeper shade, they grow looser and produce fewer flowers. Most varieties grow to about six to nine inches in height and spread accordingly.
Propagation: While most hybrids are propagated from seed, this process requires considerable patience. The tiny seeds (approximately two million per ounce) must be sown in December or January for robust plants by May. The optimal temperature for germination ranges from 70°F to 85°F, and it takes about 14 to 21 days for germination. For an easier approach, cuttings can be rooted, making fall and winter propagation on a sunny windowsill an ideal method to start new plants.
Uses: Wax-leaved begonias are perfect for large, formal plantings due to their uniform size and shape. They also work well at the front of summer annual borders and complement other cool-colored flowers in mixed plantings and containers.
Related varieties: The Cocktail series, including Brandy, Vodka, Whiskey, and Gin, is known for its popular dark-leaved begonias. For green-leaved varieties, the Lotto and Pizzazz series are great options. Avalanche begonias, available in pink or white, are more sprawling and ideal for containers and hanging baskets due to their elegant, arching growth habit.
